Unit 21 Archery Javelina Hunt

Been hunting unit 21 for the past few years. Don't have a hunting partner for the above mentioned hunt, so if anyone wants to hunt along with me, I'd be glad to have the company. I got a 52 pounder last Feb. with my Remington .243 which you can see at the Arizona Game and Fish's website. Search for "My 1st Javelina 2008" and you'll see it. Send me an email at azcoyotehunter@hotmail.com or reply here. I also hunt Predators every opportunity I get.

hunting for 3 of the past 5 days

Well, day one I saw nothing!!! I did however find some prints and rooting areas. No bedding though and no scat either. And, of course a few rabbits. (should have shot them) (Jan 1st)

Day 2 ended with watching 4 mule deer. 1 buck and 3 does and more rabbits. Didn't shoot them again. Should have bought a deer tag ! (Jan 2nd)

Took Saturday and Sunday off for some family time Thumbs up

Monday, Jan 5th, lots of rain fell over the two previous days and crossing the river was a job. Almost got across one spot then had to go back and walk upstream a bit. Looked across on the other side about 75 yards and I would have come face to face with a huge Bobcat (which I could have stuck with an arrow) if I had made it across at the first spot. It got very windy and cold as the day went on. Saw nothing when the weather turned. Not even any rabbits today. Think

Day 4's results

Well, today I started out in a new area for me that is canyon after canyon after canyon although small as they may be they are still canyons or better yet, rolling hills. Anyway, after glassing for longer than I could bear, I decided to scout / hike around while scanning the hillsides. The countryside is a mix of catclaw, prickly pear, barrel cactus, shin daggers and stabbing, scratching bushes. There are some Junipers but they are sparse.

My attention gets diverted by the occasional cottontail that just seem to be able to completely disappear within the time it takes to draw the bow. They go about 20 yards all the while alowing glimpses of themselves between the shin high stabbing plants before turning to the right or left and vanishing once again. When I think I know which plant he is hiding behind, I stalk slowly in that direction. Most times just before I get there I see the little gray and white fur flash from a new unexpected, distant, short plant that isn't tall enough for the rabbit to hide behind. Fooled me again! And, disappeared again! Back to the Javelina ! I'm just wasting time! Brick Wall,)

I rounded a ridge on the way down to a wash and saw a coyote across the canyon about 350 yards away getting berated by a lone raven. I sat down and began to prepare to make my best impression of a dying rabbit since I had a predator call with me, but decided that I can hunt coyotes later. Although it would have been pretty cool to take one with a bow! Thumbs up They are free to hunt year round but, even when shot, still don't add meat to the freezer. Again, back to the task at hand!

I saw nearly no signs of javelina today until about 1 hour before sunset. I stumbled across a "Javelina Highway / Intersection" with many converging trails that eventually come together and cross a wash!

At last !!! Think Thumbs up (so I thought) I sat in the brush with many shooting lanes from all of the converging trails funneling together until my pins were all but too dark to see. With my head hung low and depressed again, I made my way back to the truck in the dark. sad A dark end to DAY 4 !!

Any luck?

Unfortunately, No. I had to go back to work today. Last year I scouted for about 8 - 10 weekends and had the same result. Seems like you just have to search and search and search and prayer may help. So far, I have turned up a big fat ZERO this year. Brick Wall,) Last February, I had my sow in less that 2 hours on my first day of the hunt after seeing nothing for all those days of scouting. They are all waiting for my tag to expire and be hunting coyotes or something before they show their faces this year so they can make faces and laugh at me neener! !!!!
