I thought I read somewhere once about a state that had a two stage draw. First round winners are drawn. People have to pay/pickup with 6 weeks of notice. After 6 weeks, too bad.

Unclaimed are then put in to another draw of which all first round failures are auto entered. Winners are notified and you have another pickup/pay period.

Can't remember what happens to the unclaimed from the second round, but presumably the number of unclaimed from the second round would be so small it wouldn't matter.

Just looked at the Idaho F&G site. This year there will be a second drawing for unclaimed tags instead of the first come first serve mess they had last year.

I find all this Tag drawing business very interesting.
Here in Florida all you do is go to your local Tax Collector and purchase your hunting license and if you are hunting your own land or are leasing your hunting land thats all you have to do.

However if you decide to hunt a Wildlife Management Area you must also purchase a WMA Stamp to afflix to your regular hunting license. With this stamp there are several little numbered stickers that you can attach to a "Special Quota Hunt" for whichever WMA that you may choose to hunt statewide. This "Special Quota Hunt" stamp allows only a certain number of hunters to hunt a particular WMA during the first couple of weeks of the season. These are issued via a drawing of all applications recieved before a certain date, june 30th I believe. Whats left over (if any) are issued on a first come first served basis with the postmark on your application being the deciding factor.
There is no extra fee involved other than the cost of a WMA permit.

What would be the purpose of the Tag Drawing system? Just curious.

The purpose is to fairly distribute tags over a course of years when demand far exceeds supply.

Usually folks that hunt in the east or south come west or consider hunting west for the first time, they are suprised they can't just buy a license the day they arrive in town (in general). This is because the south and east usually has more deer than hunters can ever hope to go after in a single season.

On a side note, Colorado is the only (I'm pretty sure about that) state that still allows over the counter sales of elk tags.

JTapia, not sure about Idaho, but here in Colorado demand for some tags & certain trophy units far outweighs the number of tags issued, so consequently a draw. Guess you could compare it to a lottery. There are a few choice units that literally take 15 years or more to build up points for and finally draw a tag. We also have OTC (over the counter) tags, for most big game, however in recent years since the mule deer population has dropped off, they are now a draw tag.

Elk used to be all draw, but now that their population has increased, most units offer OTC bull tags.

Then there are bighorn sheep & moose. Very few tags are issued, so of course all draw.

Down in your area, you must have an abundance of deer - or maybe not as many hunters. Consider yourself fortunate to be able to purchase tags when you want to.

Yep Deer are plentiful.....supposedly !! Danged if I have had any Luck lining one up in my crosshairs this year !!!

Daily bag limit here is 2 antlered deer per hunter per day.

Yeah Bitmasher I would be one of those folks standin there beside my luggage with that surprised look on my face.

My next Question is; if you do not draw a tag then is the season over for you before it even gets started? Or is the Draw only for trophy units?
How are points accumulated?

Yup, for some species if you don't draw out, then no hunting. No one in our family has drawn a mule deer tag in a couple years, and we're not going for trophy units. Points are accumulated for each year you apply. If you don't apply, then no points. So you have to apply year after year to build them up.

Sure seems ironic that the Western States which offer guided hunts to the avid hunter from all over the world has residents that miss the season because there are not enough tags to go around. But I have seen this discussed in another thread on this forum, now I understand it alittle more.

Bitmasher,
Idaho has alot of units with over the counter elk tags. Can hunt the day you buy them if season is open.
Used to have to wait for 2 days for bear tagsto be valid but they stopped that now can hunt them the day you buy them.
