Other than the fact that it probably will be a madhouse Saturday morning, I think this is a good program. I know of some anti hunters that will put in for hunts just to keep hunters out of the field. This way, all of the tags get into the hunters hands, or at least the anti's have to purchase the license, permit and tag which in the end will support us as hunters.

Well good luck with the tags Mattravj. Hopefully you won't have to get up too early. Wink

So I'm confused now, did Cliff put in for 20+ yrs then finally draw in this unit or did he hunt this unit for 20+ yrs, thus the 12 bucks, like Rather_Be_Huntin said?

I was suggesting the preference point system if hunters are having to wait 20 years (on average) to draw a single tag in the unit.

No Cliff ahs been putting in for this trophy unit for 20+ yrs and has never drawn.
He has taken those bucks in other units he has hunted. Has them hanging in his shop with his elk racks. He just wants to hunt that trophy unit that have huge bucks in there. Unit 45 late hunt.
I saw a guy in Wal mart the night before at 7:00 p.m. waiting for a tag. I was out hunting.

Well, they started giving out numbers at 6:00am and I got number 43.... It was a mad house alright. I didn't get a tag needless to say. I think they maybe aught to consider just doing a second drawing for those that originally put in for a hunt to give them all a second chance at drawing. Seems that would make it more fair and possibly avoid some controversy.

That's too bad, hopefully you'll draw next year and not have to deal with it...

As far as I know, Idaho is the only state that does not collect the money as soon as someone draws a tag. In Wyoming, the total amount must be sent in with the application and once drawn, the money (permit and application fees) is taken. Utah is the same, you draw the tag and it is paid for immediately.

Correct me if I am wrong, but in Idaho, you apply for the drawings and only pay the drawing fees, not permit fees. Once notified that you have drawn, you go to the nearest permit sales office and purchase the permit you drew by the end of August, or lose it.

To correct the problem they are having, why not just make everyone send in the total amount (permit and application fees) and keep the money of those that are drawn. They would collect all of their revenue at the time of their drawings, send the money back to the unsuccessful hunters, and leave the decision of wasting a hard-to-get tag and money up to the hunter.

Just to add to what jshutah said, in Utah you actually don't have to send in all the money when you apply for a draw tag. You can give a credit card number and they will only charge the card if you draw. Otherwise they take 5 bucks for an app fee and thats it. This is my preffered method.

JS if you draw here in Idaho and are unsuccessful you do not get the money back. Or are you talking unsuccessful in drawing?
Way I see it is they dont do it that way as if they put the tags back on the market then they know the animals will be hunted or harvested. I like the way they do it except I think they need to resubmit the names again if leftovers are available. Try to give it to the people that paid for there try at the hunt.

I totally agree Supersider, let the people that paid for a chance at drawing have another chance, rather than having a free for all that can be unfair if not handled well by the vendors.

In Utah, Wyoming, Arizona and Nevada you have to send in the full amount of the permit (or use a credit card) you are attempting to draw plus any application fees. If you are lucky enough to draw, the state takes the money you submitted with the application right then. They then mail you your permits. In other words, you pay for any permits you draw immediately. If unsuccessful, your money is returned (except application fees) or your credit card is not charged.

The way Idaho seems to be doing it (maybe I am wrong), if you draw a permit, you do not have to pay immediately (except for application fees), leaving some people with the option of not picking up and paying for their permits.

I agree with the main idea of what most of you are saying, if Idaho keeps the current system, they should award those unclaimed permits to hunters that applied in the original drawing.

I have a friend (non-resident of Idaho) that was lucky enough to pick up a late season muzzle loader tag during the unclaimed tag sell off. He was in Soda Springs, and once the rest of the crowd found out he was a non-resident, all hell about broke loose.

I spoke with a cashier in Malad City and he said he almost had fist fights in his store during the sell off.

From what I have read in this forum and others, the current way of awarding these unclaimed permits is bringing out the beast in some of us.
