Maybe this is a stupid question, but how can you have unclaimed tags? Do they mean the person drew but didn't pay (bounced check, bad credit card)?

Or is an unclaimed tag left over from the limited draw? Just curious....

Seems that people would be kicking themselves if they drew then lost the tag because they copied down their credit card number slightly off (accidently).

This year they started a new rule and it was you had to pick up your tags or controlled hunt tags by August 20th and if you didnt then they where going to be put up for sale on Aug 30th. They used to have the drawing and alot of people where not picking up the tags so they are trying to avoid tags that where not picked up.
Hope this answers your questions.

There are even some people that didnt pick up there tags in the trophy unit for deer. I would be kicking myself. I picked up my antelope tags a month ago for me my wife and daughter.

Yes I would be kicking myself too, especially if ID has a preference point system and I had blown a bunch of points!

I assume these are all resident tags then?

Yes these are all resident tags. And yes there is a late hunt left in the unit 45 that has produced awesome bucks. I mean awesome. That is a trophy unit. My brothers old boss has been putting in for that unit for 20+ yrs and someone forgot to pick it up. I was going to try for a bull elk tag but figured it would be a waste of time to stand in line for 4-5 hours and not get one and there will be people that have friends or family running the machines that will put them in before anyone else will. I have seen that posted on other forums about family members getting there's first.
So I am going hunting and wait till I draw on my own. I will eventually and I did pick up our 3 antelope tags. Wife's, daughter's and mine. So those are all taken care of.

Well, we don't have a points system, just a lottery type drawing.... but there are still some good tags that didn't get picked up. I couldn't put in for deer this year because I drew last year, this at least gives me a shot at a deer tag I would have otherwise put in for anyway. I think the program is a good idea, but I bet your right, those with family/friends working the machines are going to get first shot...

I just read on another post where a couple of family run businesses are shutting there dorrs for a couple hours so they could get there family and friends tags. What a bunch of crap. But this is why I wont be there.LOL There wont be any tags left over at all. I would give it 20 minutes and all will be taken.

Sounds like a mad-house. Better camp out at the tag booth if you want any reasonable shot at these unclaimed tags! Sounds like pre-booking for a rock concert. Wink

Although I have never gone after a leftover tag (not unclaimed like there in ID) here in CO, I have heard the lines can get pretty long and people sometimes get there hours before the big event.

You all ought to consider lobbying for a point/preference point system there in ID. It helps for the high demand units, since each year you don't draw makes you more likely to draw the next year.... 20+ years is a hell of a long time to be putting in for anything.

The 20+yrs is on a trophy hunt with limited tags. Cliff has killed at least 12 bucks over 28" as this is all he will shoot. Nothing smaller. he packs in on horses and hunts for only mature bucks in the back country.
I like the system the way it is here in Idaho. It is going to be a mad house this year because of the unclaimed tags because it is the first year of having to buy your tags before the 20th of Aug. Any other year would of been no problem.

The way I read your post supersider34 I thought you meant he had put in for 20+ yrs and not drawn. I also was thinking Idaho needed to do some changing. But if your friend has taken 12 bucks over 28" in that 20 years then I wouldn't want it to change either.
