You're the only one who can answer whether or not a guide is right for you. As for cabin rentals, there won't be much available in that area. There are very few towns in and around unit 76. Maybe try looking around Creede.
You kind of did what I don't recommend most people do, and that's to refrain from elk hunting until you draw a great tag. Doing that makes you miss out on much of the learning process. So in your case, it might be better to hire an outfitter to take better advantage of the great tag that you drew.
Nobody can really have a hotspot, becuase no one can hunt that unit on a regular basis. Assuming your father's mobility is going to limit you, I'd suggest you start by looking at the areas around the Seven Parks, Wason Park and the Wheeler Monument, Metroz Mountain, and the logging roads on Black Mountain. There's lots of good places to hunt, but you'll have to assess your's and your father's mobility.

I know waiting on this draw might not have been the smartest thing to do but we are not rich folks, we are a blue collar family and spending 3 grand a year, a piece to drive half way across the country and take two weeks off work to do it is just not practical for us. Dad is a young 55 and can go all day, I meant that in the years to come, this will be our hunt of a lifetime as father and son chasing true trophy elk . But I do apperciate the info on where to look around. We were in Creede last Oct. checking out some places there.
