Turkeys in Upper Michigan

Hows the turkey population in the U.P. these days? When we moved away 26 years ago we were just starting to get some coming onto our property and starting to see them regularly on some of the fields.

Has the population continued to improve or have things like the wolves had a negative impact?

I talk to my cousins about the deer hunting but I just realized they never mention the turkeys.

From what I have heard and

From what I have heard and seen, the turkeys are doing pretty well up there. My wife's parents lived there until they passed a few years ago, and we went up there a few times a year. It was quite common to see turkeys in people's yards and also here and there in the fields and wood edges.

I know that there are turkeys everywhere in the Lower. It's really hard to believe that they have done so well since I first began seeing them about 25 years ago.

In some parts of the state - and somethimes anywhere you go, you see them here, there and everywhere in large numbers.

I don't have any recent numbers on how many are killed by hunters each year, but I'd say it's a healthy population.

There's a very healthy

There's a very healthy population of birds in the southern part of the UP to the west of Escanaba where the weather isn't nearly as nasty as the rest of the upper.  I would imagine there are also a lot of birds being fed by the farmers up in that agricultural part of the UP.

I grew up in Kingsford until

I grew up in Kingsford until I was 10 and then we just moved over the river into Wisconsin just outside of Niagara. That is the general area I remember seeing them when I was a kid and where I would go if I ever head up there to hunt.
