Trip planned

This should be good. Bunch of guys on a local web site here in Oregon going on a winter camping and hunting trip, Jan 15th to 17th. Going to Juntura, Ore looking for chukars, coyote's and just maybe a lion. Only problem I have is my right knee need's a brace most the time now, bone on bone! Then there's that other thing, my left knee also needs a brace from a fall I took several months ago and it just isn't healing well. Then there's that other thing, I haven't worked the boy's much since eary last spring, couple of farm dogs!

Well started working them a bit a couple days ago and think they'll make it thru alright. They've never seen a wild bird, Not much left around here. This is gonna be great if I can get them into some. Supposed to be some good flats near there that does hold some birds. If not, then I'm also taking my 243 and will look for a coyote or two. Taking the 32 S&W Long and the 410 just in case some rabbit's charge the tent late at night. If you don't hear from me after the 17th, I either frozen to death or am stuck on the side of a hill I never should have climbed in the first place!

Re: Trip planned

Had a great time. Knees held up for a short day on saturday but I didn't shoot any birds. Friend of mine shot birds over both my dogs, good enough for me. I stayed to the flatest country I could. Froze at night's but thaw every morning. Mud everywhere and really slick stuff! Just heard that Burns has 6" of snow now, zip when I went thru! Juntura probably has a bunch.

Got almost there on Friday morning, about 15 mi from Juntura and lost the alternator in the car. Had to turn back to Burns and get a new one. $265 sure blew a hole in my budget but had a good time anyway.

Tried a new way of taking food. Made stew to take along and scrambled up eggs. Put individual serving's in freezer bags and froze them. Then took alond my turkey frier base and a 5 gal bucket. Put rocks in the bucket then a bunch of water and boiled the water. Dropped the bage in the boiling water and they were ready in about 5 min, worked great.

Got a propane heater to use in the tent and it worked real well but, they claimed the tanks lasted 10hrs on low; don't believe it! Ran out of propane about 2am sat morning but was only about 25* out so wasn't so bad.

The dog's had a great time, looking forward to next year.

Re: Trip planned

You should of had them dogs sleep with you, there like haveing heaters in the tent and they will keep the bears away. Did your buddy say if the birds were very spooky or did they hold after splitting the covy.

Re: Trip planned

You obviously don't know my boy's. Friday night worked out alright with Squirt at my feet and Bodie laying across my chest,,,,,in a sleeping bag,,,,,,on a cot!
Saturday night was a bit tuffer. Squirt curled up on my feet and Bodie started out on my chest,,,,in the sleeping bag,,,,on the cot! Then at some point Bodie rolled over and ended up on the floor, between the cot and the tent wall,,,,,,in my part of the sleeping bag! Feet were fine as Squirt wasn't moving,,neither was Bodie! So Squirt had his share of the bag and Bodie on the floor had his share. So I got up and picked up the horse blanket I'd brough for them to sleep on,,,,it wasn't doing anything special, and threw it on the cot for me. Well it was dark so I didn't know that Bodie had decided to get back on the cot. Now a new plan came into being. I managed to get them both up, with the light on this tme, and get the sleeping bag back where it belonged and threw the horse blanket over it. If you have never tried to beat two young tierd dogs back to bed, you have not lived, I lost. So I made Bodie get down and held his collar till I got in. Then he crawled in the sleepoing bad again. Yep, this time he took not only the sleeping bag on the floor but the blanket went with it. So, being resoursefull, I took the mat off the cot and put it on the floor. Spred the sleeping bag on it and covered it all with the blanket. Worked very well and that's where we're gonna start from next time.

Good laugh. Laugh

Goes to show you don't always have to shoot something to have a good time.
