Tough hunt

But got it done. Lopes weren't out Sat. I believe due to the cold wet weather. Were bedded and holed up somewhere not in their usual haunts. Did find a couple nice bucks near end of the day but were just over the fence property line of what we could hunt. This morning about an hour after light found one single buck and set up on him. My rangefinder wasn't getting a read out and I guessed him to be at a little over 300 and held just above the midline and shot right under him. I walked out to where he was and ranged back to my dad and found the distance to be 350. Cruised around found a little herd with a buck around 11 am once the sun finally came out. Stalked to within 200 yds and was getting ready to set up on my sticks and a truck came down the road and blew em out. Kept on cruising and glassing and glassed up a buck bedded at what I guessed was a mile away. Parked the truck and proceeded with a stalk and closed the distance to a little over 300. Right when I was setting up on my sticks he stood up and I pasted the cross hairs on his upper half and fired. I thought I missed as he ran about 15 yds and stopped. I looked down to set my sticks up again and when I looked up he was gone. I glassed and didn't find him anywhere running any where, but saw three does looking back where I last saw him. I figured I may have hit him and he might have dropped and the does were waiting for him. I walked to where I last saw him and found him piled up dead. The Rem 700 ADL and 168 Berger blew his lungs out and did the job again. I ranged back to the truck and it was 990 yards. Took me about 45 minutes to drag him back to the truck.

That's a great antelope.  And

That's a great antelope.  And you had to work for him too.  That makes it that much better a trophy in my opinion too.  Congrats on a fun hunt even if it was tough!

Hey

Thanks guys! Wasn't a tough in the sense of busting your hump like on a killer elk hunt.Opening day was just tough in the sense of the lopes being hunkered down. Drove and glassed alot of miles without spotting anything. Highly unusual for this area when the action has been fast  and furious in years past. But, it was the cold drizzly weather had em down. Sun afternoon once the sun finally came out started spotting em. The stalk was something I felt really good about. Once I got to about 400 yds I was thinking I should set up and try a shot. I didnt really feel good about that as there was about a 10 mph wind and whe was bedded. I was not headed straight to him but coming at an angle kinda away from him crouched along a fence line. I decided to push it 100 more yds. I was able to get the distance and felt I was pushing my luck and set up and as I did he stood up and bam! Once I found him I was glad I had to put in some stalking skill rather then the ole round a corner there they at 100 get out of the truck and make an easy shot. I'll take those when given, but working for it did give me a sense of accomplishment. Again thanks.

congrats on a very nice goat,

congrats on a very nice goat, I leave in the morning for the fire burned north west part of Nebraska for my goat hunting, heard it been tough finding them in the early muzzleloader season, hoping for the best but I have 8 days to cover lots of lane, plus a archery deer tag and 2 turkey tags as well. Should be a fun hunt.
