Tips for Opening day on Public land

If the opening day of dove season was any indicator.......opening day of deer season where i hunt is going to be really crowded.

I'm looking for pointers on what i can do to give me an edge over other hunters.

so far i have the following theory:

If i go farther, deeper, and earlier in the AM (2AM maybe?).....maybe the other people will push them my way on accident.

i have a spot where i've seen deer tracks.....its deeper in the woods than i feel most people will go.....i will approach from the woods parking area (not from the field parking lot)

i wont use any scents because i think every other joker out there is going to go overboard and it will repel rather than attract deer.

i want my area to be a quiet hole in the woods.....

theres some stupid people i've seen out there....so i'm expecting the worst.

share insight please

i got monday off work....and i'm going out!

here opening day is called amature day lol here is a simple system i used that worked for a number of years where i hunted there was at the time a lot of clear cutting going on that left some huge choppings that were very popular with deer feeding mostly at night these choppings were criss crossed with skidder roads after a few trips i noticed that hunters would come in at first light and cruise these roads to spot deer which they did , this one chopping went up hill to a stand of spruce and soft wood at the top was a drainage ditch that went down hill on the other side and came to another road ,across this road was where they bedded in a swale near by where a stream was located i observed that every time i went by that ditch i saw fresh sign crossing the road so what i did i set up a small ground blind about 50 yards up from the ditch , i would park my truck some 200 yrds and walk back so come day break i would wait for the road hunters to begain soon i would here several shots (hunters that jumped deer in the chopping ) they would more often as not miss and sure enough not more than 5 to 10 minutes later a set of horns would come up out of the ditch !!! bingo i was waiting and ready for them .shot many fine buck at that location !

If you haven't already look at some arial and topo maps of the area. Locate your secluded area and look for any draws and such the deer will travel as the road hunters and 1/4 mile hunters push your way. Best bet is get in early. Mat be a nast long walk but the meat that may fallow will be worth it.
When I hunted CA we would be out atleast 1.5 hours before daylight to get back in and away. Often times doing 10-15 miles round trip and 4-6K vertical feet up above timer line and down into bowls on the other sides.

jeep you pretty much have it nailed. Most of the public land hunters dont go in very far and usually use the planted fields that the game commission planted. Get as far and deep as you can and find the nastiest most inhospitable place on the property. You will find deer there and rarely many hunters if any. Thats about the only way I found success in Pa on public lands the few times I hunted them. In Pa opening day sounded like world war 3 at first daylight. Another trick I found is around 10 o'clock try to get in between the "hunters" and their parked vehicles. Most of them come down for lunch around 11 or so and push the hell out of deer. I've connected many times doing that but you have to be careful of your background and shots. Good luck Thumbs up

If there's more than one hunter. Have one stay back at the truck. Give it about an hour or so and the deer will come out, near the truck. I assume their thinking that everyone is out and it's safe.
Every time I spend a morning working a high pressure modern firearm area. Typically in the middle of the week. I see tracks around the truck when I get back.
