Heading out this evening to Maryland for the first real deer hunting trip of the year. I am nowhere near ready, got gear strewn all over my office, sharpeners here, video camera there, and a splash of camo in between. I am supposed to be heading out on the ocean at the moment but three of the four guys that were going had to back out last minute so we threw in the towell.
I idioted up and cut my string on my recurve two weeks ago and was slack on reording a string for it. It didnt arrive in time so I am going to take the PSE for a ride I reckon. Myself, my son and my friend Greg are going on a scouting/meat gathering hunt.
Looking forward to taking a pulse on the woods up there and seeing what likely adjustments we may have to make for the upcoming rut. Two of my buddies were up scouting earlier this week and first indications were saying that my set ups from last year are going to be strong again this year. They saw two nice bucks feeding 40 yards from where I was hunting/filming last season. Should be little need to bother those deer so we will probably just check them up and then slide back in in a few weeks and try to get some good rutting action on tape.
Meanwhile were also going to stop into a little private land spot I have and take out some does. There are areas in Montgomery county that have upwards of 200 dpsm. Its ridiculous and if you can find a spot to hunt, you better bring plenty of muscles to drag and cooler to pack. It can be very prolific meat hunting at times and I have personally taken five does in a morning hunt there. Thats meat hunting with the potential to have one of those 130 class Maryland backyard deer slide in at any time. Great fun, and it leaves the rest of the season to focuss in on a big deer cause the freezer is already packed!
I'll let you guy know how it turns out. Maybe we will get lucky and slap a tag on an early buck.
Heres a few Md deer from past years.
A Pre Rut 9 pointer 268 lbs live weight first one me and a buddy teamed up on. Dave finally put the killing hit on this one just as the sun was coming up. he had been making scrapes under our stand for 20 minutes in the dark prior.
Howard county 9 point 250 + live weight another one of my buddies took this pig following three does past our stand. Publc land buck right there.
Taken alot of first timers up here and seen them get their first bowkill. My buddy Ronnie took this nice 105 inch 8 pointer as it made a scrape 30 yards from his stand year before last.
See you in a few Hatracked out
