Is there such thing as a versitile hunting dog?

I own and breed my own pointing labs, they are GREAT! They can do it all! Point and retrieve upland birds, they are powerful swimmers and have great marking abilities, they will just about die to retrieve or hunt!

Alex,
Welcome! Great looking dogs! I have two labs myself now and have hunted over them for years. I can't says as I would own another breed. Although I have heard some really good things about Standard Poodles!

hey guys- i'm a newby here on the site- stuck at work and started reading-- good advise, but for e4c4ever-- I am a true believer that personal training is the key-- if you pack in the time with your dog in the field, that time will be the best investment. pick a breed that you are proud to own and get a dog that is from a good hunting line and then make it a priority to train daily, you will greatly increase the odds that your dog will learn all you want from him. good luck.

Labs or Goldens are pretty good all-around bird dogs.

The only dog use I'm aware of for biggame is in black bear hunting and wild boar hunting where the use of dogs is permitted in some states. Believe it or not, I've heard that both the American Bull Dog and the American Pit Bull Terrior are great for bating bear and holding wild boars.

For waterfowl I prefere a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. It can be a difficult breed, but still one of the few that are still bred for hunting. The others such as Labs and Goldens seem to becoming bred to be a trendy family pet.

Pointing dogs

I agree with the previous posters about a dog that will do everything. To my knowledge, that type of dog doesn't exist. For my money, and bear in mind this is personal opinion, the best all-around bird dog is a Brittany Spaniel. They work hard and hunt close. The dogs have excellent noses, mine pointed a chukkar that was knocked down and ran down a rabbit hole under a mesquite bush. She was locked up on point and I was sure she was smokin crack, as I could see into the mesquite and "knew" that there was no bird there. Danged if I didn't look into the rabbit hole and see the chukkar sitting about 18" down the hole. The Brittany's have webbed feet and swim well and are not as hyper as a German Shorthair or an Ebglish Pointer. I take mine dove hunting and she sits right by me until I release her to retrieve a downed bird. She has even retrieved a downed birds that she didn't mark. I just point out to the pond and tell her "down bird" and into the tank she goes and fetches the downed bird. I have owned several over the years and have been very happy with all of them. And I train my own and they are very easy to train.

I do wish you luck in your search. But give the Brittany a look.

You may want to do a little more research on the Decker (rat) Terrier.... Thats the reason I got into them.... I'm going to be working with mine on Hogs, bear, and cats here real soon.... all the varmints and birds have gotten boring... LOL
