theft while hunting

Here is the scenerio.  You are several hundred yrds from you vehicle or camp up in the rocks or trees and you see someone breaking into your belongings, car, camp and you are out of cell range.  What do you do?  I have never hunted where cell service is nonexistent and will be this year.  Just curious on what everyone would do or is there a law about that sorta issue.  I understand that u can protect yourself if they shoot at you but do you yell and sceam while they look at you laugh and steal your crap anyway, give a warning shot????

In over 45 years of hunting

In over 45 years of hunting and camping out in the mountains of the western states I have never heard of a camp being broken into.  That doesn't mean that it hasn't happened but not to anyone that I know of and that means a lot of hunters.

As far as what would I do if I saw it happening?  If you are several hundred yards away you might as well just sit there and watch and write down a good discreption of what was happening.  Now if I was close enough then they may have to try and figure out where I was at when I told them that they were covered and to lay down and put their faces in the mud.  If that didn't work, well then a couple of thier tires would go flat quite fast just so that they couldn't get away.

Lucky for me I've never had

Lucky for me I've never had that happen. Florida has passed a "make my day" law so I wouldn't recomend doing that to any of my stuff. I could get "scared for my well being" and start shooting some rounds off.

I'd suggest shooting a couple shots in a different direction to let the would be thief know that someone is present. though from my experiance people do not tend to steal from hunters. I've left my camp set up for months on end without anyone even stealing some firewood.

Never been around anything

Never been around anything like that, but I think I would fire a warning shot.  The sound of the shot just might change their mind.

Camp Robbers

Back in 1990 we had almost everything in our camp stolen along with 23 other camps on the Uncompahgre. It was one of the most direspectful and sickest things I have ever had happen on the mountain. Luckily we had at cost replacement insurance and seeing as our camp was our home away from home they replaced evrything we could remember. Never did catch the pieces of s#$&.

If I caught someone doing that again I would almost beat them to death. Mad

I am with Critter. If I was

I am with Critter. If I was some distance off and had no hope of getting close enough before they were done I would take in every detail that I could to give to the authorities. You could get in a lot of trouble for a warning shot and all that would do is give them time to leave with what they already had. If I was close enough to stop them then they would definatley know that they have been caught and there get away would be hampered by flat tires.

Yeah, i would say that if

Yeah, i would say that if it's going to be broken into, you're probably not going to be around to hear it.

Yeah, I agree with this. You gotta decide if you're going to be hunting game and staking out a ridge or hunting thieves and staking out your camp. Like most everything in life there's a risk and a chance we gotta take. One can attempt to safeguard against this as much as possible but unless there's going to be a camp guard can't be 100% certain. However likes others have said we've been fortunate to have never been ripped off.

I do remember my uncle telling me that years back in Wyoming he had the head of the  biggest mulie he's ever killed stolen from their camp while everyone was out hunting. Nothing else taken. If I ever get something trophy class and am still hunting or staying at camp for a few I'll lock it up somehow.

Come to think of it, I

Come to think of it, I actually hunt within 100 yards of my car out here in CA, so I might hear them breaking into it.....

Ca_V, you have to get away

Ca_V, you have to get away from the vehicle so you can kill the big one. Don't worry about the vehicle, hike a little farther and shoot a nice one. LOL Good luck to you.

theft

I have hunted out of many camps in calif. Idaho and have only a had 3 potatoes taken in Idaho and the guy left a note that he took them? It was strange and uncomfortable but I have never had any thing of value taken. We did sneak in on a hunting partner once who was asleep on a windy ridgetop took his gun and went back to camp. He came flying back into camp with the rest of sitting there and screaming and yelling that someone or something took his gun. He is the biggest jokester in are group it was the funniest thing I ever saw especially when him and his brother rolling around in the dirt like they were in high school,When he gave it back to him. i tell you time in the woods with friends and family holds more memories than anything else. we still talk and laugh about that day still.
