Ten point buck almost

Well I aplied for and recieved a controled hunt for muzzel loader. Monday a person in our party got an eleven pointer and on Wednesday I was sitting in a tree stand and along comes this little buck fawn. To my serprise I saw rightr on his heals a rack coming over the ridge I waited till I had a good shot and plugged him. The only problem he turned around and ran down the hill and across the road where he came from and died 30 yards on private property. I did the ethical thing and asked the land owner if I could retrieve my deer and he asked where it was so I told him thinking that It wouldn't be a problem. Well at this point he says that It was private property and I COULD NOT GO GET MY DEER.
Neddles to say I was stuned.so I left and was debating to go get it anyway when He comes along on his snow machine hooks on to it and takes it to his place up the hill. Some times it dosen't pay to do the right thing.
He was a beautiful 10 pointer. The only consolation is that at least he wasn't wasted.
So much for this hunting seasion.
I gess that hunting seasions like the one I have keep you humble for the realy good ones that you get.
Thought I would share F.K.

How are the rules there for taking a harvested deer which escaped on private property? In Germany only hunters are allowed to take wild animals, also when they are runing wounded to private property.

Unfortunately here you need permission to enter private property for any reason.

Calling the warden might have been interesting - I'll bet they never bothered to tag it Evil!

oops - accidently hit edit, not quote and overwrote your post - sorry

Saskie:

I don't know if he had to tag it all he would have to say is he found this dead deer on his property and he didn't want it to go to waste. I have heard when a game warden confescated the deer but that is second hand information.
F.K.

If it was actual roadkill he wouldn't.

If you played dumb called and told them the whole story to file a complaint under Ontarios law against "interferring with someone lawfully engaged in hunting" (which probably wouldn't apply in this case) they might investigate...it'd be awful hard for him to explain that bullet hole and lack of bruising from a vehicle collision. I bet they'd fess up and return your deer rather than face a poaching charge.

Then again the CO's probably wouldn't get in the middle of this; unfortunately.

And if he had half a brain in his head (which may be streching it) it's probably chops by now.

I would have called the game warden. I think in MN, where i am from, you need permission to take roadkill, so the "i just found it" statement might not fly. I have also heard that GW's have been able to mitigate the situation and hunters have gotten their quarry.

On the other hand, that land owner has a trophy he can be real proud of. Imagine the conversations that would eveolve around that trophy at a party.

You did the right thing, even though it sucks. There is now unresolved Karma there, and it will come around again... It always does.
