Teddy Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICIAN

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Sigh... Too bad those ideals are all but lost in this country. Wife got turned down for 3 different jobs here because she doesnt speak spanish!!!! I live just outside of Chicago in Summit IL. If you dont speak spanish or Polish here, you are going to have a LOT of one sided conversations. I personaly feel that one REQUIREMENT of entry into this country with the use of a work visa or to immigrate should be the FULL and TESTED use of English. I have the common courtosy that if I were to go to someones country I would at the very LEAST learn a working knowledge of thier language. Granted not for just a short visit, but if I was going to go work there I would definatly learn it!! Its a sad day when they turn you down in your own damn country for a job because you cant speak some other countries language.

My grandparent's immigrated to this country from Poland. Neither my dad or any of my aunts and uncles could speak Polish. I asked dad why once and he said that grandma told them that they were Americans now and Americans speak English. Neither of my grandparents could speak any English when they came here. I am proud of my family!

I just found this in another site.

THE HYPHEN
by John Wayne

The Hyphen, Webster's Dictionary defines,
Is a symbol used to divide a
compound word or a single word.
So it seems to me that when a man calls himself
An "Afro-American," a "Mexican-American,"
"Italian-American," An "Irish-American,"
"Jewish-American,"
What he's sayin' is, "I'm a divided American."

Well, we all came from other places,
Different creeds and different races,
To form a nation...to become as one,
Yet look at the harm a line has done-
A simple little line, and yet
As divisive as a line can get.
A crooked cross the Nazis flew,
And the Russian hammer and sickle too-
Time bombs in the lives of Man;
But none of these could ever fan
The fames of hatred faster than
The Hyphen.

The Russian hammer built a wall
That locks men's hearts from freedom's call.
A crooked cross flew overhead
Above twenty million tragic dead-
Among them men from this great nation,
Who died for freedom's preservation.
A hyphen is a line that's small;
It can be a bridge or be a wall.
A bridge can save you lots of time;
A wall you always have to climb.
The road to liberty lies true.
The Hyphen's use is up to you.

Used as a bridge, it can span
All the differences of Man.
Being free in mind and soul
Should be our most important goal.
If you use The Hyphen as a wall,
You'll make your life mean...and small.
An American is a special breed,
Whose people came to her in need.
They came to her that they might find
A world where they'd have peace of mind.
Where men are equal...and something more-
Stand taller than they stood before.

So you be wise in your decision,
And that little line won't cause division.
Let's join hands with one another...
For in this land, each man's your brother.
United we stand...divided we fall.
WE'RE AMERICANS...and that says it all.

I'm not going to disagree with the statements posted here. But are you guys sure that Teddy Roosevelt and John Wayne actually made these statements???? Consider that many of those hyphenated politically correct phrases were not even in common use until long after John Wayne was dead. Makes me wonder if he in fact wrote this stuff. I ask because there is sooo much crap and mis-quotes floating around out there in publication and on the internet.

An example: You all may have read a quote that someone posted on the internet regarding Adolf Hitler's statement about gun control in Germany during the Third Reich. It turnes out that no one can actually find any proof in any speeches of his that he actually made the statement. It was mearly someones way of unethically creating passion in gun owners to fear gun control. Yes I believe we should be vigilant of any gun control, but give people facts to make their decisions and not enstew passion with a bunch of lies.

I see the same thing happening with peoples views on immigration. I meant do we really need to say that we should believe this or that just because some famous historical figure said it, or did he even say it??? Oppose or support something because you have good reason to, not just because any influential person gives a speech or is quoted as saying such.

Dont know about JW but the Roosevelt exerpts were taken from writings and statements made from the man himself. You can find some excellent reading on his views here
http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/troosevelt.asp

They have links to all the bio data and links to view the letters themselves.

My views on this subject are not related to anyones views or influenced by someone just because they were famous. I have the simple intelligence to make up my mind for myself. I personally do not have the "sheep" mentality that many americans of today have. I dont just go along because someone else does. My own personal experience leads me to my own conclusions as does my education. America is becoming a complacent country and doomed to fall to a facious regime if people do not start thinking for themselves and stop letting the government walk over them.

Our government sends trillions of dollars to other countries to help feed them, while there are millions of children in this country going to bed hungry. I personaly have this view, fix others AFTER you have fixed yourself!!

We allow millions yearly to immigrate to this country and take jobs while they send 80% of what they make back to their countries!! This hurts our economy more than most can imagine. What this post was started for was just a simple common courtesy to learn our damn language and to support the country that is supporting YOU!!!

Our people need to realise that the government is no longer in our control as it is SUPPOSED to be. Its time to take the reigns once again and get it back under the american peoples control. The rich make up aprox. 2% of the population, yet they control 100%. The only time our votes mean anything anymore is when there is an election. People need to learn to keep their eyes on the laws being voted on by their representitives and make thier voices heard. Educate yourselves and dont let all the little hocus pokus wordings fool you. Read between the lines on all the little tax increase laws being written in.

Ok done ranting for now

Good quote Hiker.

Immigration was relevant to Teddy because he was involved in government in New York, which always has been on the fore front of the melting pot.

Thanks Western, so do I. Oh and to correct you on something, When you said the Hyphenated terms wernt in use when he wrote that, you were incorrect. The one "afro-american" actually puts that in date with the time frame of JW. "Afro" was used not "african" They stopped using "afro" around 90 and went to "African-American" On government documents to be "PC" Which is another thing I laugh about. I dont go around saying Im "German-Irish-Italian-American" and 99% of the blacks in america are 5th generation american so where in the hell do they get being "African" anything? YO DIPWAD YOU ARE AMERICAN PERIOD. Yer dumb butt aint ever seen africa except on TV!!! And yes I say that to Black folks too.. And 99% of my black friends laugh and TOTALY agree!!
