Rocker's Inaugural Act Creates Stir
Thursday, January 18, 2007 4:59 PM EST
The Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Hours after Gov. Rick Perry kicked off his second full term in office, Ted Nugent helped him celebrate at a black-tie gala, but not all attendees were pleased by the rocker's performance.

Using machine guns as props, Nugent, 58, appeared onstage as the final act of the inaugural ball wearing a cutoff T-shirt emblazoned with the Confederate flag and shouting offensive remarks about non-English speakers, according to people who were in attendance.

Perry's spokesman, Robert Black, downplayed the Tuesday-night incident.

"Ted Nugent is a good friend of the governor's. He asked him if he would play at the inaugural. He didn't put any stipulation of what he would play," Black said.

Others said the appearance was inappropriate.

"I think it was a horrible choice," GOP strategist Royal Masset said. "I hope nobody approved it."

Nugent, a hunting and gun-rights advocate, couldn't be reached for comment Thursday because he was hunting, a spokeswoman said.

The guitarist — known as the "Motor City Madman" — lived in Michigan most of his life before moving to Crawford in 2003. He is famed for his 1977 hit "Cat Scratch Fever."

News of Nugent's appearance at the ball drew criticisms from civil-rights leaders.

I read this and just laughed. The lefties just don't get Uncle Ted. If they did, they'd realize that his whole point would have been in-your-face political incorrectness to demonstrate that words and symbols won't cause the world to explode or the sun to freeze. Ted's every bit as rabid about the First Amendment as he is about the Second, and sees political correctness as facism, and its proponents as hypocrites for shutting down free speech in the name of tolerance.

I love the guy because he's so refreshingly honest and doesn't mince words. That's increasingly rare nowadays.

Wow................Don, tisk tisk. I am in the 50ish category, live in the sticks, prefer Country Music and still know who Ted Nugent is. Shame on You!

Just giving you a bad time. lol

He is a Rock and Roll type and I think they use to call him the Motor City Mad Man or something like that. He has a hunting show that I have never seen as I can't get the Outdoor Channel where I live.

Mr. Nugent does tend to stir the pot and while there are lots of hunters that like him, there are just as many that think he caries things beyond the point of good taste and actually hurts the image of hunters. A contraversial figure for sure.

He has a line he uses for hunting......"Whack em and stack em!"

I am now at the limit of my knowledge of Mr. Nugent. If some of this is incorrect I am sure the errors will be pointed out in no time at all. Yes

Ted Nugent used to have a radio program. I don't know if he still does. But back 5-10 years ago animal rights activists had issues with the way he presented himself.

Aging rocker, hunting and gun enthusist and host of the hunting show, Spirit of the Wild.

He tends to be a little over the top for me and just babbles on at times, but a pretty good guy.

lol Indeed! He is definitely not everyones cup of tea. I have heard a few of his interviews in the past. I agree with much of what he says but at times not the way he says it, and those who know me know I tend to say things the way I see them. (Gets me in trouble once in a while. Yes )
