its so hard for me to imagine

its so hard for me to imagine some parcels of land for quota hunts when the units i hunt are thousands and thousand of acre. I think critter said it best when us out west dont measure our hunt areas by acre but instead we measure them by miles. The unit i hunt in western oregon is 68 miles long by 45 miles wide. so its a pretty big area.

I guess each scenerio can be

I guess each scenerio can be a blessing or a curse. Confused

You hunt a unit measured in square miles while we hunt a farm measured in acres. And the farms I hunt are less 200 acres each. But the farms I hunt are all privately held farms and I know who will be hunting every day and where they will be hunting. I assume you hunt public land which anyone else can hunt. How do you know the buck you have been scouting all summer isn't killed before you get to hunt or while you are hunting? If we don't kill the buck we're after, we know he'll be around next year because the word gets around the community when someone shoots a good buck. We may not hear about it the same day but we usually find out before the season is out.

The other difference about our hunting areas is that the whitetail deer doesn't migrate and has a smaller home range. The whitetails home range is usually less than 1 square mile. Our deer will be in our general area all throughout the year, not just hunting season. They may move to a different part of their home range but the majority of the time they go nocturnal instead. Whereas the mule deer can migrate as far as 80 miles within the hunting seasons and have a home range 4 times greater than a whitetail.

Yeah thats the down side to

Yeah thats the down side to where i hunt is not knowing who and how many other hunters there are, but the one nice thing about that is the units are so big that if i stay away from the roads i dont ever see anyone else, there are a lot of lazy road hunter that the farthest the travel from a road is just far enough to pee. If i hunt eastern oregon they are draw tags so atleast i know how many tags were giving out. The nice thing about blacktails where i hunt is they dont travel much either, unless they get pushed out of an area. an dwhn that happens they will usally go to the canyons wih no acess exept to hike in and that where i'll be . I wish i had some private land to hunt out here but its ok. there are some private tree farms that allow a certain amount of hunters every year i looked into one and it was about $250 for a 1 year pass, they have 5 lakes on their land for year round fishing and then also you can hunt in the fall for deer, elk, and bears, and cats. i might just do that one of these years. they wil allow 100 passes on there 15,000 acres.

One more stab at it.

Me and my cousin are headed out to Citrus wildlife area tomarow for the last archery hunt of the year. It runs untill tuesday and I can take bucks only in that area. I'm bringin the camera so hopefully I'll be lucky and get one and maybe salvage this years archery season. I've still yet to see but one doe the whole year. It's been about a month since I've deer hunted, and I'm eager to get back at it.

Whish us luck. Whistling

AA

General gun season also starts tomarow So I'll be breaking out the shotgun after this weekend. Thumbs up

Good luck putting an arrow thru one of those oranges. Hahaha
No, seriously, Good luck. Hope you stick a big buck.
I broke the ice this morning, decent 8 pointer with the rifle, nothing special but I do have venison for the freezer.
