Hey all, I am new to the Forum but I have a question. I am using 250gr Shockwaves for the first time this year and on both the deer I have shot so far neither bullet mushroomed out like I expected. Both were complete pass throughs that left very small holes in and out. Fortunately the deer were well hit and neither went very far but I am wondering if any others have had this problem. I am concerned about the lack of damage and possible lack of recovery if I make a shot someday that is not what I expected. I discussed this with a couple others at the NRC when I was checking my deer in and they have seen the same thing. Has anybody else had this problem?

this is a huge problem with the sst/shockwave that ive been on a couple of forums.

Maybe with shoulder shots it will expand some?

The thing with the shockwave and any other polymer tipped bullet, is its design is to function optimaly at a particular speed. Do some research and figure out where it is functioning at its optimal performance. Then figure where you're average shot distance is going to be, and work on a charge from there. I don't know anything about your particular case, but I'm assuming you might be using 100+ grains of powder, and probably shot those deer under 75 yards? If that is the case, then it was whizzing along a bit fast and wouldn't open properly. T/C will be able to help you out. Email them, they are very good about getting back to you, and they've always given me a straight answer.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the info on this. I am shooting 100gr of 777and both deer were inside of 75 yards so it sounds like you hit it right on the head with this one. Up until this season I have always used T/C XTP's with no problem but decided to give the Shockwaves a try during the summer range times. They were just as accurate but more readily available so I went with them this year. I will just go back to the XTP's though, should not have changed just cause it was easier. Thanks again.

I've also experienced the same results with the SST and the Shockwave, but come spring I'll be testing the Barnes Spit Fire, I've read a lot of good things on their products. They are reputed to mushroom from as little as 1000 fps.

Although more expensive they will be my hunting complements (if they group well) and the Hornady will be used to punch holes in targets.
