Switzerland and the gun

I thought this was a good read for those that equate high gun ownership with high crime.

There are a few things that we Americans tend to not realise about the Swiss. They are also much much more diciplined and more mature than most Americans are. Rules and obedience are very much a part of their upbringing and culture. There is a very high cultural expectation to do the best that you possibly can in that country. Both education and skills are very highly regarded. What's more is that the Swiss population actually understands this. I also think that the family structure in Switzerland is much more like we Americans used to have 40 or more years ago. In other words, much more stability in most home environment. There are certain rules and laws that govern their way of life and these rules and laws are largely understood by the population, followed, and enforced. Maybe they actually enforce the laws that they have, rather than lobby for new meanlinless laws. They also have a much better economy that we do, though poverty and drug use has increased there in recent years. They have much tighter immigration laws and tighter boarder control.

As far as gun laws go. Yeah they are much more gun friendly than most of Europe, but don't be mislead. There are many more rules and laws that the Swiss follow, than the NRA will have you believe. They are not as free about their guns as certain states here in the U.S. are. Thank God to be an American, though I wish America would get back to being like it once was.

All true, WesternHunter. But the underlying point here is that most anti-gunners would have you believe that the mere presence of guns within a society is sure to increase violent crime. The simple existence of Switzerland puts the lie to that notion.

It is much more complex than that.

I'm with Westernhunter. I also wish America could be like it once was. I pick the 1950's. You know, before the hippies of the 1960's came along and started the moral demise of our society.

Saying a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag didn't hurt anyone. It did, however, strengthen moral character and promote patriotism.

The key to being on the left is self-hatred. You have to believe that the US is the source of all evil in the world. Human beings are bad and should take a back seat on every environmental issue. And, of course, the individual is self-serving, ignorant, and can't be trusted with anything -- whether it be eating habits, whether to turn off the right-side airbag, wearing a helmet, or protecting oneself. That distrust of the individual is so ingrained that they feel that there's no way criminals can be responsible for their crimes -- it has to be due to some external factor.

Bottom line is that the left's attitude toward the individual isn't that much different from 18th century royalty -- the peasants are too stupid to survive by themselves, and must be looked after and provided for like infants. That's a lie that oppressors have told themselves for millenia so they can think they're doing people a favor by imposing their will on them.

The crazy thing is that the left has convinced America that we're under threat of right-wing facism. And yet every significant dictator and genocidal maniac in the last hundred years has come from the left -- Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao Tse-Tung, Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, Castro, Pol Pot, Qaddafi, Robert Mugabe, Milosevic, and Hugo Chavez have all been socialists who placed the state above the individual.
