Wehave had Sunday hunting in parts of Muskoka for tha last 2 years and I think it's great, but I'v heard from some who don't hunt that they don't like it because they like to take a walk in the bush. I figure that they have all the other 8 months to do that and if they go into the bush stay on trails and ware hunter orange.
My 2 cents F.K.

My sentiments exactly !! Thumbs up

Well, Here's my take on the subject......A copy of a letter I will send to Brent Roy at the DNR and a copy to the Telegraph.

Mr Roy;

I was reading an article in the Telegraph Journal recently, tucked in an inconspicuous part of the newspaper, regarding the , "QUOTE"...

"The provincial government has been quietly gathering input on the idea of allowing hunting on Sundays"

"Why is the input being gathered so "quietly?"

You also state that even though the process of gathering the info is in it's "early stages", go on to state that so far, even 50% of the hunters are not in favor of the idea..... Kind of a presumtion on your part , isn't it? Sure would love to see the stats on that statement. I have been hunting numerous game for over 30 years now and I have yet to hear of any of the hundreds of hunters I have been in contact with say they are opposed to hunting on Sunday.

In reality, no hunting on Sunday, had a religious overtone when I was a young hunter, in the late sixties, and was soley based on that overtone. It had nothing to do with conservation....not to mention that the deer season then was 2 months with a two animal bag limit of either sex, when the deer population back then right into the seventies, was meager at best.

Personally, I think it's high time that you folk in the DNR start to focus more on promoting "this resource" to our young folk, rather than worry about your political agenda with the government or for that matter with the pulp and paper industries. The amount of young hunters persueing this resource has fallen off dramatically in the past few decades..... And I believe that is because there is "no interest shown, (by younger folk) where there is no interest given". (by the DNR) And our DNR falls far short of the mark. And don't lay it on the fish and game assotiations.....They do the best they can with the resources they have. When push comes to shove , the balls in the DNR's court, so to speak.

Do I believe there should be hunting on Sunday? Absolutely!

Maybe then I can take my grandchildren out some Sunday afternoon after church.

Sincerely....

Here is a copy of an article in the Telegraph Journal (Opinions pages)......

Wildlife Federation backs Sunday hunt

I would like to offer the following comments to Mr. Damon's letter (Oct. 24). I think it is important for Mr. Damon and other New Brunswickers to know that the New Brunswick Wildlife Federation (NBWF) forwarded a resolution to the Department of Natural Resources this spring requesting that Sunday hunting be permitted. This resolution was passed at our April 2007 annual general meeting.

I guess I missed the portion of the press release where Mr. Roy stated that 50 per cent of hunters are not in favour of this idea. I would also question where these numbers came from. The NBWF attempts to represent the interests of all hunters in this province. We do have branches around the province and feel that a large percentage of hunters in this province would be in favour of Sunday hunting.

The NBWF has put forward this resolution on behalf of New Brunswickers who work every day of the week and only have the odd Saturday off. The NBWF is working hard to create hunting opportunities for all New Brunswickers. Sunday hunting would allow a person to take his/her son or daughter hunting rabbits or partridge after church or shopping. Hunting's in our blood and is a celebration of our natural heritage.

All provinces and territories except New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI allow hunting on Sunday in some fashion or other.

In closing I would like to thank the Minister of Natural Resources for considering this proposal and Mr. Damon for his letter.

RON WHITEHEAD

Wildlife Chair, NBWF
