This stinks....

Man, I have not been able to practice at all, and the season is 4 1/2 weeks away.  I decided last week to dive for a ground ball in a softball game, thinking I was 19, not 39.  I landed right on my ribcage, no padding, arms outstretched.

Well, hurt like a son of a gun, and went to urgent care 2 days later after an unpleasant night.  Not broken (so they say) but I have a "bruised chest wall".  Good goly, that hurts.  The 3rd night was the toughest, I couldn't move.  It's amazing how much you use your torso in eveything you do.

Anyway, now it's healing to where it feels like a muscle pull, just a bad one.  Not even gonna try to pull a bow for AT LEAST another week.

Ugh........

Sorry to hear about your

Sorry to hear about your injury!   That does suck.   sad  However, I can't help but be curious:

1.  Did you make the play?

2.  Did your team win the game?

Good luck healing from your injury.  Hopefully it heals quickly, and you still have enough time to practice for your archery seasons!

No, I did not make that play,

lol

No, I did not make that play, and no, our team did not win.  However, before the injury started to tighten up, I got up to bat the next time up and stroked a clean 3 run home run over the left fielders head.  I then singled the next time up, but had to have a pinch runner cause it was starting to hurt.  I did my part... I played my last serious soft

I played my last serious soft ball game when I was 42.  At the beginning of the season I laid down some rules to my fellow players that I would follow.

#1   I do not SLIDE anymore

#2   I do not DIVE for a ball anymore

#3   I will protect the beer chest at all cost.

You know what?  I wasn't hurt that year at all.  Now days when I play I jog around the bases and let fly balls that I use to be able to catch drop in front of me, and I have just as much fun now as I did when I was in my 20's.  As far as your ribs, they take a long time to heal.  I rolled a couple one year and the next morning I couldn't move side to side or roll over in bed.  All I could do is go up and down on a vertical base.  It took about a month before I was back in shape again.

I quit playing softball 5

I quit playing softball 5 years ago.  While I miss playing.  I do not miss the bruises and skinned kness all the time.  That is what I need a nice church or CO-ED league.

Well, played again yesterday,

Well, played again yesterday, 2 weeks after the injury.  Other than it feeling a little tight, and being mentally apprehensive, it was good.  Think I can pull a bow back now, so I gotta get practicing.  Just in time, only have 3 weeks from this coming Saturday till the season starts.

Good to hear your feeling

Good to hear your feeling better, Hope you can get your bow tuned up and peactice before the season starts. I'm getting excited for hunting its only 2 weeks away for me, well thats when it starts, my big backpacking hunt isnt till mid sept but still looking forward to it. I'm just now debating if i wanna deer hunt before my wilderness trip or wait till the late season in NOV. I have a surgery looming and dont know if I'll be ready to hunt in NOV, I'll find out more on the 24th when I see the surgeon.

Well I have to ask - it is

Well I have to ask - it is about a month plus later - did you get that practice in?!?!

Side note - I gave those same rules as Critters to my coach and he benched me to protect the beer chest... then when they saw I was protecting it for myself I got put back on 3rd base.  Darn-it!

Hope you are better by now! Big smile

Softball Sucks

OK, I said that with a smile.  I'm a bit late for this post but haven't wandered thru the archery section for awhile.

The last game I ever played in the local league was the last game of the season four days before the opening day of archery antelope season.  I had about 10 days of scouting invested and a hand dug water hole blind set up on what was looking like the closest thing I've ever had to a guaranteed successful hunt.

Rounding third base I saw the catcher standing 15 feet in front of home plate still waiting for the ball to come into him.  Too far for me to slide & too close for me to stop so I figured he'd move or I'd hopefully go over (as in above) him.  He didn't move & I didn't go high enough.  My knee caught him in the head and I came down more or less upside down on my elbow rolling into the plate.  I was safe, we won the game, he was knocked out & I broke my elbow.

No amount of begging, bribing or threatening would make the Doctor put my arm in a straight position for the cast.  I told him he could rebreak it and reset it in a couple of days with no threats of law suits (hell I offered him half the meat) but no go.  My draw length was reduced fron 30 inches to about 26 inches assuming I ate enough pain killers to allow me to try.

I thought about taking a camera to the blind but figured that would be too much salt in the wound.  About a month after the rifle season, a saw a photo of the buck I was hoping to jab with a pointy stick - I'd seen the buck three times at the water hole, the last time about 30 yards from my recently constructed blind.  The guy popped it with his .270 about a half mile from the water hole.  It scored right at 80 inches.

Softball Sucks.
