Starkey bowhunting questions

I have only bowhunted Starkey/Ukiah one time previously in September 2009 and was there the 12 - 23. I found the bulls were very vocal everday in the morning until around 0930 ish. All the bulls that I observed were single bulls with a herd of cows ranging 3 - 9 in the group. The only bachelor bull I saw was a respectable 5x5 that I missed.

I was wondering if anyone has experience bowhunting Starkey/Ukiah earlier (end of August) when the season starts and if the bulls are bugling at that time or if they are responsive to calls at the end of August? Also if you know roughly the time frame when they start to form their herds of cows? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I bow hunted the starkey last

I bow hunted the starkey last season. I went for 5 days at the start of the season or end of Aug. I didnt see or hear a single elk. I went again at the end of September and there was bugling everyday i was there. Had a couple chances at some bulls but i didnt work out. I also spoke to a few other hunters that hunt there every year and they see or hear most rutting activity the last 2 weeks of the season, every so often it will start at the begining of sept. This year i plan on hunting the last 10 days of the season. Even when i deer hunt there with a rifle in early Oct we hear the bulls screaming all night and most of the morning.

Hunting Tip: "Make Your Own" Dominant...

Here is a tip that was passed along to me - and I have not tried it yet - but it looks (and smells) like it will work fine! The gentleman that gave it to me regards it as his secret weapon and he is a VERY successful hunter. Get a fresh tarsal gland off of a decent buck - I think the ranker, the better. Taking them off of bucks that are hot in the rut seem to be the best because that is when the glands are the darkest and have the most "male buck" scent... Take that gland and put it in a good,...
