We primarily hunt the north end of the unit a few miles from where the 21 road separates Starkey and Ukiah. We have a good canyon that is about ½ mile from the Starkey experimental fence and acts as a natural funnel where the elk move through. With the roads being closed to motorized traffic its right at a four mile hike to the canyon. But it has always been a producer. We generally leave 2 to 3 hours before light so we can be sitting up there when it gets light. I would like to think I have finally got smarter, probably just lazier that’s why I got all set up to backpack hunt so I don’t have to make that 8 mile round trip each day. And that 8 miles doesn’t even include the other hiking we do around there.
