Starkey/Ukiah

I bow hunted Starkey/Ukiah last year 09. We hunted off the 21 road that was close to the Indian Reservation. I was lucky enough to get a shot however missed a nice 5X5 about a week into the hunt. So for my first trip I was happy however was not too impressed with the lack of game that we saw on the Starkey side. We glassed a lot of bulls that I'm guessing had been pushed onto the Indian land.

Where we normally rifle hunt we saw lots of fresh sign however could not get anything to respond to our calls. It was pretty hot in the mid 80's and not sure if that's normal for that time of year since I have always rifle hunted in October. I'm looking forward to going back and giving it another try however right now planning on spending more time in Ukiah where we had most of the luck.

Re I hear ya

numbnutz,

I was there Sept 12 - 27TH last year. I think we rut really got up and going around the 16th last year. Each morning the bulls were buggling till the weather got warm around 10ish. After that it was quite and seemed like you had to hit the thickets. How has the action been from previous years getting up there when the season first starts?

I've havent been there at the start, only in oct (for deer) and nov(for spike elk). but I do hear them bugling in early oct while deer hunting. I have a few friends who hunt there and they say in the beging of sept can be pretty productive. not really bugling yet but you can find them with cows and there not very spooked yet.

I got a late start up there

I got a late start up there last year and was wondering how the beginning of september would be. I'm not going to make it over this year to bow hunt since I have to much going on in Idaho this year but hopefully I will make it back in 11 for bow hunting if I don't draw a rifle tag : )

Right on. Glad you have a good hunting family that likes to participate. I will always remember my first bow hunting trip there last year. Didn't come home with anything but it was one of the best hunts I've had in 15 or so years of hunting.

Re do you go to starkey often or

When I was living in Oregon I started hunting Starkey around 93 I believe. I hunted there every year till I moved to Idaho in 97. I don't make it back to Starkey every year due to some hunts going on in Idaho. I drew a bull tag in 08 and got a nice 5x5. Last year archery hunting missed a nice 5x5. This year I'm not going to make it due to my moose hunt. But see what next year brings if I'm lucky enough to get a bull tag. If not I will come over for archery if it does not conflict with any other hunts going on. I would love to come even for the Oct spike hunt but dropping $500+ now for a spike tag is a little unreasonable to me. Back when it was $300 wasn’t so bad.
