From The Stand NC Deer Season 12-13

Thought I would comprise a little journal of my hunting season this year for future refrence. This is my first year hunting in North Carolina so it will be a learning experiance.

Archery Season Started on the 8th and my brother and I have a few stands set up on Public gamelands we plan on hunting this season.

Opening morning was a flop. We were setup on the edge of a large cornfield but didn'nt see much. We came to the conclusion that the deer were funneling through on the opposite side of the stand. We ended up moving the stand sunday because ther eis no hunting on sundays here. Weather was a bit rainy as this cold front was coming in.

Monday was better and we saw muliple does and fawns but none would get close enough for a shot. We also had quite a few turkeys come by. We hunted both morning and afternoon and the deer seemed to be moving all day. we had a cold front come in and bring temps in the 60's.

Tuesday was a little slower only seen one deer. We had a small buck run straigh accross the cornfield directly at our stand and pass us within 2-3 feet. The little spike was moving so fast we didn't have time to make a shot. He was moving around 6:30-7pm... weather was clear and temp was in the high 60's

Pictures and more updates to follow

Wednesday afternoon hunt we

Wednesday afternoon hunt we had a doe and yearling at 25 yards but they were in tall corn and couldnt see them very well. it was right before dark and we didn't have a shot. Weather was warming up a bit still in the high 60's low 70's most of the day.

Thurday we put another stand up on the back side of a recently plowed field. scouted it a few days ago and some bruiser tracks in there on a heavy trail. We ran into 2 other hunters parked there on the way in... They decided to hunt somewhere else because they had climbers. Didn't see anything but skeeters. The spot looks promising but might be hunted by a few groups of people.

Probably hunt our first stand on the corn field tomarow and see what happens. hoping we get some rain soon to get em moving again.

Some of those skeeters down

Some of those skeeters down there are almost as big as the deer, probably some good meat on them.  Any limit???? Wink

Keep at it!

lol I prefer to keep them

lol I prefer to keep them alive and put a saddle on them big skeeters and ride them back to the truck.

They're horrible here in NC it doesn't help that I'm hunting the swamp.

Well I havn't updated much

Well I havn't updated much because there hasn't been much to report. Archery season ends friday and I've struck out every trip. I hit this season hard and found lots of places NOT to hunt lol...

Muzzleloader starts saturday and hoepfully I can pull it together. Gonna' move the stands today and possibly get one more archery hunt in and then give the stands a break friday and hunt saturday.

Wish me luck...

That's usually how I am.  I found out where not to hunt......lol

Good luck in ML!  Wish we had an earlier ML season here, but both places I hunt, VT and CA, have seasons in December after the rifle season.

Finally

Went out with my brother this afternoon for a hunt on the gamelands. Had a group of young deer feed in front of us for about 10 mins... I decided to take a shot at one... Shot 20yards and dropped it in its tracks. The deer ended up being a button buck and only about 60 or so lbs but it will be my first NC deer and my first deer with a smoke pole.

Glad I finally got my first NC deer. it's been a long and slow last few weeks in the woods here.
