Stallion Range in New Mexico (Oryx)

Just found out I drew a "Once in a Lifetime" tag for hunt 1-114 on the Stallion Range for Oryx in Feb 2012.  Has anyone else hunted there or tried to take one with a Bow?  I'm thinking of trying with the bow the first two days and resorting to the rifle on the last.  If its a waste of effort, I'll do Muzzleloader two days and rifle the last.

Also, I'm sure it will be enclosed in the security packet, but do they allow you to film your hunt?

Wow! Congratulations! That

Wow! Congratulations! That sounds like a really good deal - drawing a once-in-a lifetime tag!

Help us non-residents out a little, though. Where is this Stallion Range? I see that it's in New Mexico - I figured it would be someplace hot.

Good luck on your hunt. Make sure you take plenty of pictures and plan on sharing your story when it's over. Thumbs up

Congratulations on drawing

Congratulations on drawing your tag. This year was my first try but I didn't make it, I ahd applied for the Rhodes canyon hunts.

The game brochure specifically states that camcorders are prohibited so I guess that would rule that one out. From what I have have read they just started allowing cameras either last year or the year before but only pictures of the animal are allowed.

Remember when planning that you may or may not be allowed to hunt the first day depending on what they have going on.

Congratulations again, I'm sure you will have a great hunt.

Congragulations. That is a

Congragulations. That is a nice hunt but I would take the ML and rifle. Those animals are very skidish because they get chased every month of the year.

My son was there in january of 2010 and got a young oryx at about 90 yards but they came at us at a run from about 700 yards so it was exciting.

I like the south mountians and the west side for my kind of hunting.

The first pic is from the hiway at the small missile range.

2 & 3 are my sons 2010 bull at stallion.

4 is my 09 broken horn cow from small range.

5 is ny son-in-laws 09 bull from the small range.

Dont have a pic but he got a off range broken horn bull in 10 and has drawn a off range for July.

Wow! Those are really nice

Wow! Those are really nice looking animals. There must be a good amount of meat on them; they look like they must weigh what - 400-500 pounds?

Congrats on the nice hunts. Thumbs up

For reference when applying

For reference when applying next year I see most of the guys here drew the Small missle range. I applied for the Rhodes canyon units based on research over the net. Since you have hunted there is there a big difference or what did you base your choice on?

And how tough are the public land off range hunts?

Great Info!

Thats backs up what I've heard.  I'll still have my bow in the truck, but it looks like we'll give it a go with 285 Grain Barnes Expander Sabot pushed out by 150 grains of powder.  The 300 RUM will be close by depending on the weather and the pressure from the other 69 hunters.

Its always nice getting answers on this website from people who have hunted in your specific location and have actually harvested what your hunting.  Thank you.

That is correct we got betwin

That is correct we got betwin 125 and 200 lbs of the best meet that I have ever eaten. The old bull that isnt pictured was tough but others were tender and very soft or easy on the tast. I like oryx better than elk, deer, buffalo, barbary sheep or any other game and way better than any beef I ever raised.

Like Jsmitty said, some of

Like Jsmitty said, some of the best meat out there.

While I have not done it myself, I have a friend out here that drew last year and got a great animal.  He's a huge bow hunter, but took his rifle for this hunt.

So, that should tell you what you need to know. A once in a lifetime hunt, you may need to swallow some of the traditional pride and go with your best chances to get an animal.

Congrats, and best of luck.  I bet it'll be a long 11 months. Thumbs up

The small range was closed

The small range was closed this year because of low numbers so you wont get drawn there.

I found a pic of the off range bull my son-in-law got in 09.  What is cool if youlook at the point of the sholder you can see a mountian lion clawgrown into the skin. He got this in august and time they got home with it the hair had sliped so he scraped the hide and found scars from the ears to sholders on both sides, all healed up. These are tough hunts but if you hunt next to the range you can have a successful hunt.
