I'm putting in for Capitol and Kapowson

Chris,

It's me Bearhunter. Hey, let's talk about this Spring Bear Hunt. I was thinking of putting in for the Capitol and Kapowsin hunts this year. I never have put in for the Spring hunt before, but I really want to score a nice Bear this year so I can send the hide down to my brother-in-law, in Texas, who's a taxidermist. I sent this years horns down....

Anyway, give me a shout....rick

Just applied for the Spring Bear Hunt

Well, I had to do it on the phone, but I finally got my Spring Bear applications done. I tried to do it online, but when I went to purchase my hunting licenses, (which you have to do before you can apply for a special permit hunt), the system said I was going to be charged a $10 Administration penalty. I stopped the purchase and called the Fish and Game Department. Apparently they are changing their online purchase system, and not all the records/files have been transferred from one system to the other yet. The guy had to go log in somewhere else and call me back to let me know they had verified that I had in fact filed my deer, elk, and bear reports for last year. So, then I just purchased all my hunting and fishing tags, catch records, and permits for next year while I had him on the phone. That only cost me a little over $150...

Two things to note for anyone thinking of applying for the Spring Bear hunts here in Washington.
1 - On the F&G flyer I picked up at the Sportsmen Show, which shows the different hunts, it has the application deadline as midnight, March 13th. But, on the F&G website, it says the application deadline is March 12th. Don't get caught a day late....apply today.
2 - You cannot purchase a combo Deer, Elk, Bear, and Cougar combo license online. You have to do it at one of the dealers or directly from the F&G department.

Typical Washington F&G goatrope....

Anyway, now all I need is someone to show me around the Capitol Tree farm, or the Kapowasin South area....

Got my apps in a while back. The F&G sent out a letter outlining the new system switch, what you can purchase online versus in store, but it was only sent to those who applied for spring permits last year.

I never saw mention by F&G or others online, I am assuming that they (as I) figured that it may keep some people from applying. Sorry.

Last year you had a one in seven chance of drawing in the CF unit, this year I am sure it will be close to double.

Last year I got a large male in the CF unit. But am hoping to get drawn for Kapwosin.

What kind of help are ya looking for? I can't tie one to a tree for you, but I can hopefully get you amped for bear. I took one in Capitol Forest last spring.

Here is a post that I found on another board about the CF unit. To be honest, it is quite accurate.

Here is the whole thread http://www.refugeforums.com/refuge/showthread.php?t=431807

Quote:
I got a tag last year and it turned out to be a big "goat rope".
WDFW "awarded" 100 tags to "lucky" hunters in the Capitol Forest
If you're not familiar with the area just picture this:
It's a warm spring day, birds are chirping and bees are buzzing. 20 or 30 spandex clad cyclists are zipping around on mountain bikes, two carloads of facially pierced mopes from Evergreen are wandering around smoking dope, 5 or 6 diesel crewcabs festooned with N*** stickers attest to the presence of camoclad yuppyboys scouting for the last 10 easterns in the area and amid all this natural splendor comes yours truly followed by 99 other dorks who have gotten the same "privledge" from WDFW to hunt spring damage bear.
At this point it becomes obvious (even to me!) that the only purpose of this so called "hunt" is to put so many people in the woods that even the most self deprecating clown of a bear would not come within a mile of the "damage areas" which are meticulosly marked on a color map provided by WDFW to all the lucky hunters so that we can all concentrate ourselves in the same area thereby assuring that the discharge of any centerfire rifle would be absolutely irresponsible and stupid.
Great "hunt".
I decided not to apply this year.

There is a 50 mile race in the CF on Saturday April 15th starting at 5 am.

Here is a link to the course map.

Race map

You may be able to use this map and the DNR damage map to hunt some fringe areas. The amount of racers is unkown to me, but they will have aid stations, support and a ton of vehicle traffic.
