???Spring Bear???

Hey guys and gals,

Im putting in for the drawing on Spring bear here in Washington and was looking for any information on the Sherman Area GMU 101...any help would be greatly apperciated. I have hunted this area around the Republic area with no luck back in 2005...but did see a fair amount of sign.

I also put in for a spring bear tag in this area. I deer hunted in the sherman area and got a nice deer. A buddy of mine hunted in the same area and said he saw 3 bear but I didn't see any. This will be my first bear hunt and I think I'am going to start out with my bow and set up a ground blind. If anyone has hunted bear this way,let me know how it went.

I was up in that area in 2004. Saw plenty of fresh sign and one very large bear.
We're planning another trip up. Possibly this year but more than likely next.

I recently moved closer to the shop. About 10 miles southeast of Tacoma. I was out between Eatonville and Yelm but it was getting inconvenient. The business is requiring a lot more of my attention.

We will more than likely be up to the northeast corner in the next year or so bow hunting some of those Whitetail, big Blackbear and Turkey.

This year we are talking bow hunting Mulies at the south of Lake Roosevelt. One of the trditional shooters I hang with. Puled a nice 4 pointer out of that area last year. He wants to take me up this year.
I've never tried Mulie with a traditional rig. This will be an experience.

Yeah, I have a few pics of them hanging. There on the wife's computer,so I will have her e-mail them over to me. My dad and I were able to pull out 2 deer in 3.5 days, we saw about 30. I shot mine in the first 3 hrs of the hunt at 18 yrds and it only went 30yrds but of course straight down a hill. My dad's was alittle easier. We saw a herd of deer about 40yrds from camp, walked with in 23yrds of the deer and got her. It was so close to camp we actually carried the deer back to camp. We had the deer field dressed and in the truck and heading home by noon. It was a blast to share that moment with my dad!!

Fuzzy,

I could never live on that side of the state...WAY too many people...Where abouts are you gonna hunt along lk Roosevelt?...thats a big pond to just say around there...it's got some damn good fishing too I might add....im Gonna be hunting the actual area of Sherman...if you know any thing about it the White-Mountian area....very few roads and that means very few hunters...lol...you living in Washington would know what thats like....

Funkster,

sounds awsome....Idc if they are all bloody and gory...lets see some Washington Bone....Sherman has got some monster Mule deer...my mom just shaked up with a guy from Kettle Falls who has hunted Sherman for over 30 years and he has some phonomenal racks.....he has 7 muley head mounts any where from 27-34 inches off the Sherman peak...and one white-tail a 5x6 that is 24 1/2 inches wide....it's awsome....love to see some pics

Well you (we) should find out the draw results any day now. They have until the end of the month to notify us by mail which takes a few days and we should see the results online about 4 days before that. Good luck everyone!

Back to the original post.

We were planning on hunting this unit next year, but after some research I am not sure anymore.

In the 2005 general season they killed 47 bears with a 5.9% success rate.
In the 2004 general season they killed 57 bears with a 6.5% success rate.
In the 2003 general season they killed 74 bears with a 8.1% success rate.

I normally hunt for bears in areas of 10% success rates or higher and it looks like the Sherman unit has reached its peak and is now on a steady decline. Most likely based on the roughly 30-40% female harvest over the last few years.

Now that being said, I would think that this spring hunt there should be great, with a slight decline over the next couple of years, which will in turn drop the harvest during the general season.

from someone who lives in the area

I rarely see bear - tho I don't claim a great hunting ability. I hear a lot more about sightings up by Orient closer to Canada.(its more common to here of sightings there)
