Spot & Stalk or Baited Stand ?

What is your favorite way to hunt black bears? Spot & stalk, call them in, or hunt them from a bait stand?
Where I live the ground cover is to dense to S&S so baited stands or staking out a known trail are the two most practical ways. Also black bears are most plentiful source of red meat so baited stands are the most efficient way to go. All that said there are times when meat isn't an issue and I just want to get out and do some serious hunting I'll some spotting in the early spring or late fall while the foliage is down.

Here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, spot & stalk is not really possible because of dense cover. We do have those who hunt bears with dogs but most bear hunters hunt over bait. I do not know any one who tries to call in bears around here. All of my bear kills (9) have been over bait.

I like to hunt them with hounds but alot of times we end up hunting for hounds instead of bears but you get to see great country and LOTS of it!

Western Washington is very thick so I prefer to use predator calls. Usually you can hear them coming before you see them.

What kind of call do you use? I always thought that would be fun.

I make my own by turning wood on a lathe and inserting reeds.
But rabbit distress and fawn/calf distress are the basic sounds. My favorite comercially made call is a Burnham Brothers C-3 Long Range.

I've done spot and stalk, baiting and dogs. I prefer the bait method, just because of the solitude and anticipation. It just helps me to unwind and rejuvinate my senses with the calm nature experience away from my otherwise busy life.

Down here in northern ontario 95% I think hunt outta stands over bait best way to get em in I guess and yea the relaxtion of sittin in your stand watching all the other animals and waiting for that big boy to come thru the bush and theres nothin like that first glimpse of yogi commin straight to you.
