Spot and Stalk or Stand Hunting

Witch do you prefer and or do?  Spot the animal and try to put the sneek on it or use some kind of a stand or blind?  A hunting buddy of mine and I were discussing the same question today since he just got a new tree stand.  I couldn't believe that he bought it because he just doesn't have the patience to sit in it long enough for an animal to show up so that he can put an arrow through it.  I on the other hand like a combination of both.  I'll usually do a slow walk or glass until I either find a good loaction or spot an animal and then try to put the sneek on it.  So far I have been fairly successful at doing it that way.

I have never had enough

I have never had enough patience to sit still. I have always been a "still hunter" and a "spot and stalk" type person.

I like the combo too

It would depend on the area I am hunting. If I was bumping elbows with other hunters I would find me a good saddle or scout escape routes and just sit, in the morning & evening, allowing other hunters to push them to me.  During the noon hours I would move around to locate other animals or other prospective areas.

If I hiked 5 miles in and did not see anyone for days I would do the opposite. In the morning and evening I would find that high point then spot and chase.....and chase. Then find me a good place to sit, hunt, and glass/lunch the noon hours.

As far as a stand I have thought about it but figured it would limit my hunting area.

Well since I have not

Well since I have not harvested an animal doing the spot and stalk way maybe its time to try the sit and wait. But to be honest thats just not me, I enjoy the chase and the game of who is the smarter of the 2. So far the ELK have been the smarter and with any luck and a Blessing it will change this year!

I lioke to hunt both ways.

I lioke to hunt both ways.  Spot and stalk is awseome as you try to sneak in, but it is very cool to be siting there and see them come in totally unaware,

Whatever it takes

I personally like all types and feel there is a need to do both. For instance (check out my trail camera picks in my gallery) I think it might be a good idea if the traffic of the Elk are still coming to the tank that all those pictures are coming from, then I should sit my boy around that tank during his hunt. We will have already walked in a few miles to get to it. But if the bulls change it up and are getting pushed then we should find a high spot , glass and stalk. Last year it was all a chase for me from start till finish. I don't know alot of guys that do have the patience, including myself. But things I have found that help me sit in a blind is alot of praying, daydreaming or sleeping. Funny I know but it works.

A combo of both. As most do,

A combo of both. As most do, I like to hike up and into the prime area before daybreak. I get to a bench that gives a nice wide view and glass all ridges that can be seen looking for game when the sun rises. If a legal animal is spotted then a plan is made and the stalk is on. If no animals are seen I take a slow, slow, pace on trails through this area stopping and glassing when I feel like it. Even when I'm moving I'm doing a lot of glassing. I've got the whole day until darkness falls so I take my time and move thru the country anticipating that buck or bull or bear might just be around the next bend or seen on the next slope.

Do a little of everything

Most of the country I hunt is poor for glassing.  The timber is typically too thick.  So it's more still hunting, tracking and ambushing on trails and meadows.

Ex, you don't use your glass

Ex, you don't use your glass in the thick stuff? I never thought of it until my uncle advised me to do it a few years ago. By readjusting the focus for close in and glassing thru timber it really helps bring out a hidden leg, ear, eye, rump, when it's thick and dark.

You probably do and just meant your area isn't good for long range glassing, but still a good tip for any newbies. Thumbs up

I learned a long time ago that when walking through timber to take a couple of steps and then glass the timber ahead.  As you said it is suprising on how many legs, eyes or ears that you can pick out and see before they see you.
