Spanish 1916 Mauser

I recently purchased a 1916 Spanish Mauser which is marked  as a .308W. I have read many conflicting post on different forums about this rifle.

My question is, can I shoot .308 or am I limited to 7.62x51???

I just want to be sure before I start shooting. Thanks!!!

Any other information on this rifle will be appretiated.

seriously?

Pretty sure the only difference between the two is that the NATO cases are thicker because they run at higher pressures.  They are the same thing, external dimensions between .308 Win and 7.62x51 are identical.  And your gun is marked .308.

I may have been wrong once before Whistling , but  I'd love to hear an explanation rationalizing why couldn't shoot .308 in that rifle.

Take your pick on ammo and go

Take your pick on ammo and go out and have fun with it.  Of all the reloading manuals that I have that differentiate between the two the loads are just about identical.  You'll come upon the same question with the 223 Remington vrs 5.56x45mm or the .30-06 vrs 30 caliber for the M1 Garand.

.308W

Since it is marked with 308W it has been sporterized. None of the military Mausers that were arsenal rebarreled to 7.62 NATO will be stamped with .308W unless it was done after the rifle left military service and the subsequent owner marked it. If that is the case, it should also have 7.62 on it somewhere.

The only marking I could find

The only marking I could find on my rifle was the following "Oviedo Spain M1916, SAMCO MIA FL 308W".

I believe Samco would be the

I believe Samco would be the importer and they show both designations on the website but they have been on backorder for well over a year now.

A google search will bring up a ton of information about these rifles.

308 Win == 7.62x51 == 7.62

308 Win == 7.62x51 == 7.62 NATO

Winchester commercialized the NATO spec.
