Southern CA Hog Hunting Question?

Hey guys,

I just came from a hog hunting trip in the Monterey area. We hunted various BLM areas, i.e. Laguna Mountain, Condon Peek etc. and had no luck taking a pig out of the area. I've gone on three hunts in this area myself and the best I have done is seen some tracks along a creek, but i'm afraid the chances of actually finding a hog in public land in this area is very difficult. Private hunts like Tejon Ranch are a little out of my price range. This might be a stupid repetative question, but I figure i'd take my chances. Does anyone know 1) Other public land areas in the southern CA area besides the areas I listed above that has wild pig (maps and addresses would be helpful). And 2) does anyone know how to find private ranchers that want wild pig extracted from their land.

Any help is good help. Even if people have suggestions about the Laguna Mountain or Condon Peek areas on how to hunt it, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

I just spoke with the gentleman who makes this map. Very nice guy. He doesn't have anything for So. Cal. yet. Only central and Nor. Cal. Anyone else have any ideas?

You've got me on the trail now, Dondo. I'll let you know if I find any leads and hope you'll do the same if you find something. I know our pig population is still in it's fledgling stage, but hopefully it will grow fast considering how fast the pigs multiply!

I assume we're targeting the same pigs Mark........ I was going to head out Tuesday, but it looks like we're going to get the mother of all storms...... Oh well.

What do you mean? Am I behind the 8ball? Are there good numbers in in your stomping grounds? We've chatted a couple times and I think I know where you would go. You can PM me about this if you prefer because I've never hunted pig and it's like a holy grail for my fiancee and I! Either way, if there are, it looks like either Wednesday or ever better, this weekend would be a good call.

Unfortunately, I am working weekends, off during the week. I was going to go tomorrow, but this rain isn't going to let me get out. Maybe next week......

justjeff

I've only killed a dozen or so hogs, which makes me no expert, but I wouldn't chase hogs with a 223. Hogs are tougher to kill than varmints. Don't want to track down a wounded hog. I know how mean they can get in when trapped in a cage. Can only imagine what a wounded hog would be like. Besides you need to be able to make a quick, clean kill. I'd use the Grendel with some tough 140 gr bullets. Good luck.
