Son's first hunt!

Well, it's been a long time coming, or so it seems.  Finally got my 6 year old son into the field for his first time hunting with me.  Although he's not old enough to actual shoot birds himself, he makes a good retriever.

My Dad came out for our semi-annual hunting/fishing/golfing weekend.  So, 4:30 AM came early on the dove opener Saturday, but my son was bouncing off the walls all excited.  Had the morning breakfast with 20 other hunters at the hotel, and then headed to the field, and from first light, there were birds everywhere.  I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, but he seemed to think I was a good shot.  Between Dad and I, we got 11 birds.  Shoulda had 30-40, but I couldn't shoot.  Limit here is 10 whitewings or mourning doves, but the eurasian collared doves are uinlimited.  Just so happens that 9 of the 11 we shot were eurasians, as were almost every one we missed.  So, we could have kept shooting and shooting, and probably not hit our limit.

Anyway, had a memorable time with my Dad, as always, and now it's even more special, because my son has taken up interest.  Can't wait for future hunts!

  He was so afraid to take them off.  I don't think I shot even once without him having his ears covered.  Those are actually my earmuffs that I have had for 16 years.  I got them when I went through the academy, and have used them ever since.

He'll get used to it eventually.

It is good that you have him

It is good that you have him conserned about hearing protection while he is so young. I remember when I was a kid and hunting or shooting even 22's with my dad, we never did have any protection and I really didn't even think of it until I was in my 20's and bought my first 44 magnum. Now that I am pushing 60 I am paying for it. Actually I have been paying for it for a long time
