I have and do, but not nearly like normal. Usually after sitting up there for a couple hours, I have to stand up and move around some anyway, maybe grab a bite to eat, pee, etc., so I'll have one then. I figure I'm blowing it anyway at that point with noise and movement, and and after a while it won't matter as things settle down again. I also put the butt out in a gatorade bottle with a bit of water I have up there for a pee bottle anyway, LOL. Sometimes I'll spend an entire day up there and can't hold out, other times I know I'm just there for the morning or whatever and wait... all depends. I do feel better about it if there is a breeze though.
I've never noticed a difference really with what I do, and more worried about being caught with my hand full of cig I can't put down and not ready, then the smoke at that point. I have had deer walk by me while smoking before on the ground just scouting... so what does that mean?
This topic comes up from time to time. Being a smoker and hunter; and compared to past responses, this is my take on it.
No, not in general...its just a smell of burining leaves. Not "normal" but not unheard of in the bush. I don't think it automatically sends a warning to "deer in general". I have seen plenty of deer I could have shot while smoking. My wife's uncle smokes like a chimney and has tagged plenty of deer with a smoke hanging from his mouth.
Trophy bucks are a whole different category of deer. They didn't get to be mature by being brave. They may even have had a close call with a smoker in the past and have associated that smell with humans. More likely - they certainly recognize that its not "normal" for the area and conditions they live and travel in. Will they clear out...possibly - some especially wary bucks undoubtably will, but more likely they'll act A LOT more cautiously; come in slowly and carefully and probably will bust you for something else.
Chances are if I get a big buck it more truthful to say it was because he made a mistake than to say I did it right (the one truly nice buck that I bagged that certainly the case - all I did was gut it out on a bitterly cold Nov morning). I want as many things in my favour as I can get - cuz if he even thinks I MIGHT be there, chances are I ain't gonna even see him, never mind bag him.
So I take my last puff while waiting for my eyes to adjust to the dark in the morning. Put on my out layer of clothes and leave the cigs in the truck. At lunch I take off my outer layers, and smoke away until it's time to head back out again.
That's my thoughts - which combined with a dollar will get you 75 cents worth of gas.
If I smoke while hunting its usually not in my tree stand or the place im hunting. I'll smoke at the truck or before I go on a hike into the woods. Followed by whatever scent elimanor and cover scent I'm using.
I smoke in the stand but my biggest concern is when I’m smoking and its mixing with my scent if the deer can put it together and associate the 2 scents with danger it turn into a big negative and I think big mature deer get spooky over any thing that’s different or out of place!

it can be done
My uncles have killed deer with a bow.... cigarette in hand or mouth or however they did it. Do I agree with it? No... But if you have to smoke in the field I guess you just have to play the wind right. Good luck.
I'm not a smoker, but I agree with saskie. Many younger deer will walk past you, but how many mature bucks and even big old does would walk past you if you are smoking. Probably not very many unless that wind is really in your favor big time. Any foreign smell will make those mature deer wary.
I like to ALWAYS have a cigar in my pack while hunting for when I have to gut and clean the animal. Sometimes the smell gets to me and it really helps to have a fat stogey in your mouth to mask the smell. The smoke also helps to keep flys away.
i usaully go from marlboro to copenhagen about 2 months before the season starts. cigeretts dont help much chasin chucker and chewin is a hell of alot easyer huntin. no hands required, dosent fill the air with smoke.
Moose calling can get confusing to some, but cow calling is your main tool when moose hunting. If you go out and buy moose calls I would say you're wasting your money unless it is the birch bark cone. I find most store bought moose calls sounding worse than puffing a grunt your hands to make the call. You can roll up a piece of birch bark in a cone shape to use as a call and spend your money on a video that teaches you the basics of a cow call. A milk jug or a coffee can with a hole and a rope...
