I just figured it would be interesting to see what your favorite small game animal is. Mine is pheasant. What is your favorite small game animal?
Have not done it in some time, at least since moving to California 14 years ago, but I absolutely loved rabbit hunting. Both with dogs or without, those little guys are a blast, and they are great eating too.
I prefer rabbits myself. The reason is it's to far to go for squirrel or pheasant, I don't know what a chuckar or grouse looks like. I do plan on learning and going after them and also want to go rattlesnake hunting. I took my daughters and one of their friends rabbit hunting this weekend, saw eight bunnies in a few hours, brought 3 home.
I look at upland birds as a different category so when I think small game hunting I immediately think of rabbits. Specifically still hunting them with a .22. The best times hunting can be a day or two after the storm front has passed, leaving a good amount of snow & a cold, still morning. The bunnies will be sitting out in the sun and sneaking through the brush along a creek looking for that shiny black eye to aim at - It feels about the same as still hunting elk or mule deer in the timber. Tastes great too!

I agree, hunting rabbits is much like still hunting for deer or elk. In some ways, a bit more fun too. The only real difference is that you typically don't have to hike in very far from the truck and all you need is the clothes on your back and a Ruger 10/22. Many of the states SWA and STL offer pretty decent rabbit hunting too. With the exception of waterfowl and upland birds, which I hunt an awful lot of, I never really hunted much other types of small game until last October. Rabbit hunting has proven to be very enjoyable for me. Looking forward to doing more rabbit hunting this fall.

I don't hunt small game, but as boy I did shoot a rabbit one time. I brough it home and my mom cooked it up for me. That rabbit was one of the best meals I ever had. My mom is an excellent cook and I don't know how she cooked it exactly, but it was delicious.
You can't beat a nice cottontail rabbit covered in flower and slow cooked in the frying pan and gravy made out of the drippings. But then again a blue grouse, pheasant, sage hen, chuckar or any other of the birds are tasty too.
If i recall correctly my mom covered it in flour and cooked it in a frying pan using some burgandy wine to make a gravy with it.
It sounds tasty...couple that with some homemade mash potatoes, maybe some green beans and collards...what tome is lunch being served?
