slugs in a full choke

Just wondering....

My sons 870 Express Magnum can take 3" shells...currently it also has a full choke tube in it....can a person use 3"slugs (or 2 3/4" for that matter) in a full choke barrel ?

...only going to take it to camp as a bear gun...just in case...but I would like to try firing a few slugs first.

thanks in advance for any help

cheers,

Taku

It has been done and will continued to be done but the factory recomends improved cylinder or cylinder bore. why risk it when you can get a choke for a few dollers? Best of luck.

You should not fire slugs out of a choked barrel, you can get slug or "cylinder bore" barrels for that purpose.
Recoil is extremely heavy and you can damage equipment , not to mention serious injury.....

Thanks guys....

That makes perfect sense...I was really reluctant to try...hence the inquiry.

Just to be clear....would a "choked barrel" include a barrel with an open cylinder choke tube? I think I have to have some tube in there, no?

So if I use an open cylinder choke tube is that ok...I doubt I can buy an open cylinder barrel up here....we have only one store that sells hunting stuff ( I dont count Canadian Tire).....it's always the same...."we can order that for you"

Hell, I'll be lucky if I can find the new choke tube!!

Thanks for the advice...

You can order a cylinder bore barrel for 3' shell, 18 " or 20" from many ,many websites for around & 135.00.
Here's one website I came across:

I wouldn't even consider slugs in anything tighter than a Modified. Seen first hand the aftermath of slugs in both Full barrel and with screw in chokes. Barrel swelled and split and the choke tube was rip'd from the gun.

Thanks for the input...appreciate it.

I'm currently trying to find a barrell via Wholesale Sports in Alberta. As is often the case with me, I've left things late in the season.

cheers
