It would be just a bit over your price limit new but a good Browning BPS with a fully rifle slug barrel would be a great slug gun. You can get it with iron sights or cantilever scope rail. You might be able to find one used and get it for less then $400. With the bottom eject, ambidextrous safety it make a good slug gun.

Not sure what you will be using it for, I assume deer. This year I quit using my BPS and switch down to the 'mighty' 410 slug gun. I got one of those new Winchester 9410 at the beginning of last year. If your hunting will be close range, 50 yards or less it works great. And sure kicks a lot less then 12 gage slugs.

I wouldn't worry about the H&R being a single shot. A slug is massively lethal, especially in 12 guage. Unless you hit the animal really badly, one shot will be enough. Take your time and take a good shot and you'll have nothing to worry about.

Frankly, unless you're hunting grizzlies or lions, I think the benefits of a quick follow up shot are greatly over-rated.

Remington makes a combo set http://www.remington.com/firearms/shotguns/870excmb.htm that comes with a slug barrel and a regular shot barrel. Msrp on it $443 so you should be able to find it under $400. Here is the first place that came up when I did a search http://www.ableammo.com/mall/guns_shotgun_remington_870express_combo.asp

I have bird hunted with an 870 wingmaster for years and have found itr to be a very reliable gun. I would go in that direction. You get more bang for your buck this way.

I personally like the 870 but that isn't enough to down the H&R. A single shot in the right hands can be very effective AND surprisingly fast on follow up shots. I hunt with a guy that used an old cooey 12 gauge single and he held backup shots between his fingers and could rattle two off very quickly. BTW, I find the single shots more accurate than the pumps, semi, etc.

In 2000 I bought a new Winchester Blk Shadow 12 Ga. pump rifled slug gun.Sighted it in at 50 then 100 yds.Very accurate with Winchester Partition Gold sabots ,whistlin about 1900 FPS.I loaded 1 at a time when I sighted it in .Now ,deer huntin ,200 miles from home and the gun would not unload and then would not cycle without jammin.Opening day bout 1/2 hr before quitin time I dropped a 9 point ,185# deer at a trot.It never took a second step after I pulled the trigger.I went to throw a second round in the chamber and it jams.Sat down smoked a cig and stared at that buck laying 20 yds away.Good thing it was lights out. When I got back home I took the gun back and they wanted to fix it ,so after a temper tantrum they just gave me a new gun and it has worked great since. The only thing is that in the back of my mind I get nervous wondering if this replacement gun will jam some time or was it just a poor gun the first time??? I also have a Winchester 1400 auto ,that works great with every kind of load except a heavy turkey load it will lock up and not cycle.Just with turkey loads. So I guess I have not had a great time with this brand

My brother in laws and I all have a Remington 1187 with a slug barrell. Best slug gun I've shot next to my father's Remington 100 with the rifled barrell. But, 2 of my buddies have the Remington 870 and it shoots unbelieveable. Plus, it's much less expensive!

Hope you wont need a follow up shot when the first one didnt quite do it quickly enough as that deer is haulin ass while you are watchin it disappear, goin " %*&#@&^%$# ". Maybe buy 2.One for the right and one for the left.Good luck.

You'll be surprised how fast you get at shooting the single. Besides, if you do your part there is not an animal on this earth walking far with a 12 gauge slug in him period!
