Skunked or maybe not??

Well we just got back from our trip west. We hunted the Pagosa Springs area and the only elk we saw were 2 cows and a spike on the way into Colorado at about 3:00 in the morning and a cow and calf the last day of the hunt. We heard of a few bulls being killed but mostly in the upper elevations. It was so warm that the elk just hadn't moved in lower yet.

But on the flip side it was some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen . And the mulies were plentiful we saw probably 250 -300 mule deer altogether. I woul have tagged out on a huge 4x4 but- no tags = no shootin'

Here are some pics

Actually the elk were pretty low this year. We had a couple big snows prior to the seasons opening that pushed them down. You hunt here every year?

No this was our first time out there. The two other guys we went with have been there several times hunting mule deer. And to say the least these guys weren't very athletic or in shape. They wanted to hunt the same area all the time which was on Seco valley access road at about a maximum of 7700 ft in altitude. The temps ranged from the upper 40's to the low 60's everyday that we hunted. But we talked to several out-of-staters and several locals that were having trouble finding elk. We heard of a nice 6x6 killed by a group that backpacked in somewhere around wolf creek pass, one 5x5 killed near the turkey springs access road. There were also some hunters that were picked up by the Durango-Silverton while we were onboard and out of the six , two had tagged out using a guide and their camp was at about 12,000 ft.

Are you going to try again in the future? If so you may want to try a third season or late season hunt. With cooler temperatures and more snow it makes the hunt more demanding; however the cold keeps the elk moving around more in the day.

Maybe put in for a muley tag too for 2005. Apps are due by April...

Yeah I think we are going to try for mulies in '05. I think we are going somewhere just north of denver to a place some more of my dads work buddies go. That is if I can get out of school I'll start in my main ciriculum this fall so it may be hard to go. eye roll
