Single Shots. Yae or Nae

I rarely here you guys or anyone boasting about single shots. I shoot a single shot (NEF) and is dang proud of it too. A partner of mine ask when did I plan on getting a new gun and I ask "WHY?". If I were to go on a trip of a lifetime my SS is going too becuase I am confident in the gun and caliber(30-06). My buddies all have the ever so popular bolt actions which I am not knocking cause thats what they prefer but dont knock my SS. Im sure I could out shoot either of them anyday. I have seen several episodes of hunters using the Thompson Encore SS and they are just as deadly as a remington model 700, or any browning

So my question is. What do you guys think about Single Shots, their durability, and their accuracy and does anybody have one

I've only fired one single,,,make that two single shot's in my life. Neither enough to know what kind of accuracy they could deliver. One was an NEF in 223 and the other was an old Hi Wall Win I think it was that some guy brought to the range. I suspect that most any single shot can be made to shoot more than well enough to hunt with. I alway's had a soft spot for the origional Ruger #1 but never got one.

Well wait a minute, a buddy of mine had a H&R in 22 Hornet years ago that I shot a good deal but all we shot thru it was cast bullet's. It wasn't bad as I recall but it was not overly accurate. Certainly good enough for gopher's that we used it for within the Hornet's range.

Now my idea of a single shot would be a Rem 40X.

I also own a NEF with 2 barrels a 243win with a 1x-4x and a 30-06 with a 4x Leupold mounted on it. I use it exclusively for the thick forested rifle hunts up here in the northwest. I load a 100gr in the 243 and 220gr in the 30-06.
They aren't all that light, with the heavy barrel, but they hold very steady and have very acceptable accuracy. They come up quick. Get on sight quick. I can swing them around in a hurry. In most cases the area I'm hunting, with that rifle, gives you enough time for one good quick shot but I have taught myself to load a second shot with some expediency. That's where they come in handy. That may be why they call it The Handy Rifle.

I've also owned a Ruger 1B in 22-250 that could hit the primer on a shotgun shell at 200 yds. A 410ga and a 20ga. A bolt action in 22 long rifle and a Thompson center in 223. Had fun with every one of them.
My custom 270wsm was originally set up as a single shot bolt with a high power scope. I have since put a different action, stock and lower power scope on it.

I used to use my buddy's mom's H&R 16 ga for turkey. My first shotgun was a Model 66 Ithaca Buckbuster in 20 ga. I just bought my oldest son a Rossi 3-barrel combo, 22 LR, 20 ga mod choke ans .243 Win. Singles aren't bad. You just have to realize you have one shot. Missed quite a few grouse because I was waiting for the perfect shot and never got it. Yes

I've a Ruger No 1 in 280 Rem that I use for deer and moose. Accuracy isn't all that great in this particular rifle though even with handloads. Best I've ever done is 2 inches MOA.
I also had a 6mm Rem in a Ruger No 1 that was a tack driver. Theres a few articles kicking around about accuracy issues with the Rugers and how you can go about fixing the problem. Other than that, I like the lines but much prefer the Browning single for looks.

i only see the one thing wrong with single shot rifles....you may not get a follow up shot so you best make the first one count!!! other then that they claim they are very accurate but i've personally never fired one (yet) lol

I have to say nay, sorry. I had a NEF in .223 and never did like it. The brass wouldn't eject half of the time and that could really make for a bad day. The accuracy was sub par. Shorter barrel =less range, accuracy. I just didn't like it. I have one in 30-30 and like it, but the 30-30 has such limted range anyways. For a serious hunt, I have to go with the bolt action.

I personaly have never shot a high caliber single shot. I do have a sing shot .22 mag and 12g. The .22 is great for my kids and the 12g dislocated my shoulder twice with 3" slugs before investing in a good recoil pad. But it still hits like a tun of bricks. My best friends uncle has hunted with a winchester single for as long as he can remember shot, not sure the caliber, but that gun is as worn as his bald head and still drop's them year after year. I say use what your comfertable with and shoot well. Who cares what cal and how many shells it will hold.

I saw on cabelas outdoors yesterday a guy hunting open country in colorado for elk and he was using a cva opitma elite single shot in .270win and he had a bipod on it. It was a nice looking set up. The reason for me saying that is Im seeing more and more hunters use single shots. So im still happy with my singleshot in 30-06sprg.

Probably the ability to have one rifle shoot different calibers simply by cahnging the barrel is what atracts them to it
