should a lefty buy a right-hand gun?

Having just gained permanent access to great elk property in Colorado, I'm going to start elk hunting. I'm left eye dominant and definitely will shoot left handed , but should I get a left or right hand hand gun?

The Tikka T-3 Stainless Lite's action is so smooth, I think I can just reach over the scope and work the bolt with my left hand- awkward but maybe a reasonable plan in all but the worst second-shot situations... I've heard of lefties that do this effectively....Agree?

Or should I just get a left handed 30.06 stainless laminate or synthetic in another brand (no Tikka though)?

What do you think? Any recommendations or related thoughts would be appreciated.

A gun is an investment and you should always get the one that suits you, in this case a left hand model. You have to live with it for the rest of your hunting so get the one you need. Savage, Rem, Win, and others all have left hand models.

lefty all the way

i will definitely put the gun on my left shoulder- i've been shooting that way with my pump shotgun for years, and i write with my left.

so the real question is whether to reach over the scope to grab the bolt on a right hand gun or get a lefty gun that i don't want as much as the Tikka...

cheers, and thanks for your help

Lefty Righty

I am a left handed shooter, but have always shot a right handed gun. The only exception is my Rem. 1100 left eject 12ga., and that has been geat. I just bought a Savage 270 116 weather warrior (or weather master..it just left me), anyway the syn. stainless gun in left handed model. I did this because I am tired of shooting, then reaching with my left hand toward the barrel, and racking the action with my right hand on my Rem. 700 bdl 30-06. This doesn't happen hardly at all in the field, but when shooting the gun at the range, it's kind of a pain. I reccomend that you seriously consider a left handed gun, mainly because that's what's meant for you. However If you are set on the brand that doesn't offer a lefty, then go with it and you'll learn to accomodate just fine i'm sure. Do you know any one with a left handed gun? If so, put some rounds through it and see if you like it. We lefty's are pretty versatile. How many righty's are there that you know that can use a pair of left handed sissors??

should a lefty buy a right-hand gun?

I'm left handed and I hunted with a right hand gun for 13 years. Last year I finally bought a left hand Browning A-bolt Medallion (.300Win.) I love it so much that I bought another one in .270Win. I was pretty effecient with cycling the bolt on the RH action but having the right gun has made me a believer that I should have had a lefty the whole time. It did take some getting used to after hunting with the righty so long but it was well worth the switch. The bottom line is: You can get a RH hand gun and get the job done but given the choice go with the action the fits your natural LH preference and you will not be sorry!

Wow, great input- thanks everyone. I'm gonna go with a left hand gun for sure. Sure hope Tikka comes through with a LH model late this year like I heard they will..

Thanks again everyone!

I believe Browning also makes LH models in the stalker and hunter a-bolts as well. Something to consider Tikka doesn't offer LH models. Some Remington 700's come in LH models as well...
