Shotguns?

I am currently looking for a nice pump 12ga. that I could use for hunting. I found a nice pump 12ga. for a good price but it said "Defender shotgun" on the title. I guess that its suppose to be used for defending urself at home or whatever but I want it for hunting, is there any differences? Also if you know of any sites or people selling the shotguns...plz send to me, thanks

I would go to a gun shop and look at the Rem. 870 express. You should be able to find a used one as cheap as any of those and would serve you better. The defender has too short a barrel to be a reliable hunter rig and the Mavericks that I have seen and used have all sorts of reliablity issues. The 870 express isn't much more expensive than that new.

I don't know much about the Mossberg 835, but I can give you a testimonial of the Rem 870, since I own one. It's one of the best deals out there, and a great gun. The 870 has been on the market for decades, and a lot of people would argue that it's the industry standard (although I'm sure the Mossberg and Winchester people would debate that). I've owned a 12 ga 870 express combo
for almost ten years now; it came with both a regular barrel that takes choke tubes and a slug barrel with rifle sights.

Since you're a younger shooter, Remington also makes an 870 youth model, which is essentially the same gun, only with a slightly shorter stock and a 20 inch barrel to be more comfortable for a smaller person.

Like Ex. I am a die hard Remington fans and am bias as such. I do agree that an 870 is the benchmark in pumps. I have an SPS that has never failed me. You can take an 870 apart conpletely and re-assemble in just a couple of minutes.
I have no experience with the Moss. 835 but will relay what I have heard from other forums and owners. They all have praises for the gun with one exception. It kicks like a bloody mule. I noticed this one is ported so that should take care of that. Buy what you want or can afford and enjoy. Both guns should serve you well.

What kind of hunting do you want to do? If you're talking about quail hunting, then you need an entirely different kind of setup than if you're talking about turkey hunting, or deer hunting with buckshot.

Good point Don. Use and intended game will dictate what your options are. I, personnally, would stick to a 12 ga. because it is probably the most versatile weapon you can own. With light loads you can shoot skeet or doves and magnum loads will down your turkeys and geese. There is every possible combination in between as well.

I want to do waterfowl, upland game birds, and all types of bird. Couldnt I just put in a new choke for the different types of bird I want to shoot?
