Selling in Canada or the US?

Hi folks. I'm doing some research for my father in Nova Scotia who has a black bear rug he'd like to sell. I'm wondering if anyone around the Maritimes has sold such an item before and can give me an idea if it's easier/more profitable to sell to folks in the US or here in Canada.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Your best bet would be to sell to both at the same time. Use e-bay and sell to the highest bidder.

Firstly, you'd get a far better price for a bear rug in the States. But you have to contact your Provincial F & W people first in Nova Scotia to make sure that you can sell the hide of a black bear.
Most provinces have restrictions on what animal parts and their condition (completed rugs, mounts, green furs, etc) can be sold, either in the home province or across the border in the States. To sell in the States you may need an export permit, the origin of the fur or hide and prove the animal was taken legally and under the authority of what permit. Your local MNR will be able to give you all the details.
I hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for that information/opinion. I've done a tiny bit of searching on the internet and saw mention of permits and such so I've alreayd told my dad that. He said he could get all that no problem. But I will advise him to contact locally also, someone who can tell him the legalities.

We're assuming that if we sell somewhere that they don't readily get, or can't get at all, black bears then we'd get a higher price, as it is a really nice rug and in great condition.

My problem was that I had seen prices range from a few hundred to a couple thousand so I was excited but also confused by that. Obviously I'd like to get him the best price...so...I may try Ebay...but will do a bit further search first.

Thanks folks...that's helpful for sure.
