SEE BLACKIE AND PORKA (I'm going to try this)

that's great, u'll have a great time

I myself don't like the idea of baiting daily .
i bait once a week and sometimes twice and make sure there's plenty of food to last to the next trip, the less visits to the site the less the chances of spooking a bear , i like the bears to feel safe until the day i hunt.

now that 2 ppl are on stand, it means double the odor, to overcome that u need to overwhelm these bears with fresh nice sweet smell ,but before i tell u how u r gonna be able to acheive it i wanna respond to something u said earlier.

u said u wanna make a routine for bears to follow by ringing a bell and climbing the stand to make them get used to the sound when doing so,, well, although i have never tried the bell before , i suggest u try hiting the drum few times better in my opinion then ringing a bell. now regarding the noise u make when climbing the stand, i gotta say to u that no noise should be done whatsoever while climbing, u should take ur time , and remember that u need to be as quiet as possible when hunting them so therefore u need to take ur time and get on the stand and wait. when i climb my stand i take about 5 minutes to climb 10 steps, and while doing so i make sure nothing is gonna be in my way and nothing is gonna rub my clothes while getting up there.

now the smell.
i always take bear hunting to the extreme whether bears are easy or hard i treat all bears the same and consider them to be nasty and hard to trick, so this way i don't leave room for error .

now that u and ur daughter gonna be on stand which means double the odor i suggest u do something to help cover ur smell so i suggest u do this :

on the day of ur hunt and after u take a shower and make sure u r clean and no funny smell on u , u walk to the bait site and u spray the whole area with peppermint, anise oil, vanilla ( make sure u spray alot, and i mean alot ) spray all over the bait and the trees, do not leave anything unsprayed , then do a slow honey burn not the quick honey burn ( if u don't know what slow honey burn ask me ) then u and ur daughter climb the tree and wait quietly for bears to come,, i sometimes spray myself with vanilla to match the surrounding , let me tell ya it works !!
i did like cowboy al idea of spraying vanilla from the stand every now and then,, ( very nice one Al ) keep the smell fresh alot longer.

regarding the stand location.

How many time u hear this from bear hunters :
man there is lots of bears around but none is hitting when i am there!! and then u hear them say something like this,, what the @#$@## is going on , why they are not coming during the day ?

make sure, and i mean make sure u r picking a location that bears feel safe in it,, now seeing bear scat and tracks all over the place doesn't mean u r in the right location to setup ur stand, to make sure u picked the right location, look for lots of cover and far away from any human activity or close to heavy traffic , seeing signs in that location is a sure thing that bears are around but it doesn't say when they were made , so look around and judge the location,, is there enough cover ? does the bear feel safe here to walk during the day ? if not enough cover or bears don't feel safe, then the bear that left these signs behind is a nocturnal bear, so these signs were made sometimes during the night .. if so there is no way u can get this bear in 1 week hunting, so u and ur daughter gonna have a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng boring unsuccessfull hunt.
always good to find bear tracks but it's even better to know when these tracks were made, before u hang the stand u r gona have to look at the location and say " this is a great location to hang my stand " !!!

Thanks HoTm00n and everybody else.

Not sure what a slow burn is, please explain.
Not sure about spraying the vanilla on ourselves, isn’t that what we will be using for an attractant? how about cedar or oak?
We are not allowed to use barrels in Michigan, can only use natural things, I can build a crib and cover the bait with logs.

The picture of the scat was in an area that was pretty thick, its at the end of a point of land that goes out into a rather large swamp that’s full of little islands of oak, maple, birch, cedar and poplars, the swamp is full of tag elders.
This spot is 1/2 mile in from a medium duty highway, and 1/3 to 1/2 mile from the trail that we will be parking on.
I first found tracks and a pile of scat near the parking spot, so I scouted on another day after studying a topo map and found this spot.
In an area about 100 yds there was over a dozen piles of scat this size and slightly smaller.
Across the highway is 2 square miles of state land with no place to park and can only be accessed on foot, there is a real large swamp in the interior with a bunch of islands according to the topo map and satellite images. I plan on scouting this next Saturday.
How close together should I put bait stations? She is allowed 3.
If I have 3 set up for her then she can hunt whatever one is doing the best, and will have backups if one goes dry.
I only have enough stands for 2 spots, but may be able to barrow 2 more for the 3rd station.

SEE BLACKIE AND PORKA (I'm going to try this)

Hey blackie. sorry couldn't connect earlier, was busy doing few things.

I really ,really ,really like the location u r hunting,, 2 swamp in a low wet land , WOW !!

the only thing i don't like about this whole thing is the scat u found in the parking lot, so i need to ask u few things, so i can make better judgement in the future to help u tag the bear.

1. the area u r scouting right now ,is it popular and hold great number of ppl and hunters ?

2. is this a camping ground ? why there is a parking lot in the area ?

3. where is the parking lot located ? between the 2 swamps ?

4. u said u've found huge bear tracks in the area, can u take pictures of it ? i need to see it. the only picture u have posted here was not from a big bear.

5. the picture above wa taken near the parking lot ? is it between the 2 swamps ?

6. can u scan the topomap photo and circle the area u r scouting and load it for me here ?

7. what do u mean by medium duty highway ? can u please explain .

8. how far the 2 swamps from each others ?

9. without delay, i want u to go scout the other swamp and take pictures of it for me, i also want u to take pictures of the swamp u already checked.

10. scout the whole area , this area deserve ur attention so go through it all.

11. go to the parking lot and clean all bear signs from that area or any area where u think it's easy for other ppl to spot, then walk around and take as many bear scat as u can find and scatter it near the swamp .

once u answer me back i will look into it and go from there, i will also explain the slow honey burn for u and how to do it, right now , i won't say anything befor u reply back, i think u hit the jackpot my friend, so i am really happy for u guys because u have everything a HUGE BEAR need to call this place home !!

if i am right , u r gonna be hunting a very huge mean looking bear , so it will be interesting to see what will u guys do when u meet the owner of these 2 swamps face to face Thumbs up
but i am not sure yet , i need to see the huge tracks first before i confirm it , but this land is a BRUIN LAND for sure.

after u get back to me i will tell u what to do next, right now i'd say stick with 2 stands one on each swamp ,, and leave 1 trail cam on each as well . if u don't have any trail cam porka bought 2 cams so u can ask him where he bought it from and buy 2 and place them near the swamp as soon as possible, we wanna know ahead of time who and when these bears use these swamps.

i don't want to talk to u about baiting right now because it is too early , but to be honest with u i don't like ur way of baiting for these bears AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR .

1. The area u r scouting right now, is it popular and hold great number of ppl and hunters?
Answer. There does not appear to be, I found an old ground blind near the end of that logging trail near that private property.

2. Is this a camping ground? Why there is a parking lot in the area?
Answer. No camping, was a logging trail from when that private property was logged 4 or 5 years ago. What I call the parking spot is the wider area where the logs were stored and loaded onto trucks. It’s blocked beyond this.

3. Where is the parking lot located? Between the 2 swamps?
Answer. At the highway see the map, (there are blocked trails at the north and south ends of the map Aprx. 2.4 miles apart)

4. u said u've found huge bear tracks in the area, can u take pictures of it? I need to see it. The only picture u have posted here was not from a big bear.
Answer. OK will take pictures (that scat is larger than the diameter of a pop can)

5. The picture above was taken near the parking lot? Is it between the 2 swamps?
Answer. I put the location on the map

6. Can u scan the top map photo and circle the area u r scouting and load it for me here?
Answer. I copied it to a word document and removed the identifiers to send out over the web, “click read only”. (Michigan allows hunting with dogs, and I do not want to get a bear coming to bait for my daughter and have dogs run it off, this is why I’m staying within ½ mile of roads)

7. What do u mean by medium duty highway? Can u please explain?
Answer. Not as busy as other roads in the area, it is a class A highway, just not as busy.

8. How far the 2 swamps from each others?
Answer. Actually it’s probably the same swamp divided by the highway, in total its probably 4 or 5 miles long (wider and narrower in places) starts to the northwest of the map and empties into a river to the south east. Homes and drivable trails to the north and northwest.

9. Without delay, I need u to go scout the other swamp and take pictures of it for me, I also want u to take pictures of the swamp u already checked.
Answer. OK Tomorrow

10. Scout the whole area, this area deserves ur attention so go through it all.
Answer. OK
once u answer me back I will look into it and go from there, I will also explain the slow honey burn for u and how to do it, right now, I won't say anything before u reply back, I think u hit my friend, so I am really happy for u guys because u have everything a HUGE BEAR need to call this place home!!

Answer. Why? Can’t bait until August 22 one month before her hunt

Hey Blackie

I added few things to the post but it seems u answered me before the update, please read the additional update :

11. go to the parking lot and clean all bear signs from that area or any area where u think it's easy for other ppl to spot, then walk around and take as many bear scat as u can find and scatter it near the swamp .

once u answer me back i will look into it and go from there, i will also explain the slow honey burn for u and how to do it, right now , i won't say anything befor u reply back, i think u hit the jackpot my friend, so i am really happy for u guys because u have everything a HUGE BEAR need to call this place home !!

but i am not sure yet , i need to see the huge tracks first before i confirm it , but this land is a BRUIN LAND for sure.

after u get back to me i will tell u what to do next, right now i'd say stick with 2 stands one on each swamp ,, and leave 1 trail cam on each as well . if u don't have any trail cam porka bought 2 cams so u can ask him where he bought it from and buy 2 and place them near the swamp as soon as possible, we wanna know ahead of time who and when these bears use these swamps.

i don't want to talk to u about baiting right now because it is too early , but to be honest with u i don't like ur way of baiting for these bears AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR .

I will send u an email right now so u can send me the picture, do u mind if i load the picture here ?

in the fall it is alot harder to keep the bears around , bears are not interested in human food unless we provide something bears cannot resist, on top of that, bears will eat alot before their long sleep, so if not enough food to keep the bears interested ,they will leave the area looking for food elsewhere .

so i suggest u do it differently when u start the baiting, since we still have almost a month before u start baiting i will not worry about it now,so i will tell u everything u need to know regarding this matter when the time come, but for now my priority is ur homework .

i will read the post again and make sure i covered everything and keep adding stuff whenever i remember,, right now the focus is on the land and the bears and to get everything ready for the hunt,, when u go back there to scout look for the best spot that hold the most signs and scat

Hi
These tracks I found on the east side of the highway about a 1/2 mile in.
It was a large point out in that swamp covered with pines.
There hard to see, I cleand the pine needles out of the front print (wish I would have done the same to the rear also)
The pen is inside the rear footprint.
