SEE BLACKIE AND PORKA (I'm going to try this)

Hi Guys

Were from Michigan
My 18 year old daughter drew her first permit after trying for the last 3 years.
I have located some big bear sign in a couple of areas around home.
I started collecting bait (Bakery and Meat scraps) as soon as I found out that she was picked.
I'm alowed to start the bait piles the 3rd week of August, and I can set out the tree stands September 1st.
The plan is;
At the start of baiting I will carry out 150 lbs of bait to each of three stations, at first I will bait twice a week, and pick it up to 4 times a week and slowly reduce the amounts to about 2 gal by opening day.
Each time that I bait I plan on spraying liquid smoke / vanella scent, then after the stands are out, spray the scent, climb 1/2 way up the stand, and ring a bell and then leave.
The thought is, get the bears into a routine.
Then I'll go out with her and do the routine but leave her and I'll go back and wait in the truck.
What do you think?

Well, the bait ? will have to be left for those more knowledgeable.

I don't know if I'd want to leave an 18 year old girl alone. Bad things can happen. Any way you could .be with her? There's a good chance that she would be more comfortable with you at her side especially if this will be her first bear

Yes, I worry to much, must be the grampie in me.

Welcome to BGH by the way

I asked her if she would like me to be in the tree with her or another tree close by when she fist drew her permit and she said no. She hasn’t sat with me sense she was 14. She gun and bow hunts deer, has her own stand, and is an excellent shot with her 30.30 which she will be using. She has watched a bear while in the woods deer hunting (I think that I was more nervous about it than she was). I have located really good bear sign. And I believe that she will get a bear as long as I pay attention to everything that I have read from you guys.
The response that I am hoping for is;
Is it possible to get bear to adjust to a routine?
Is my method for baiting correct? Or am I going to be putting to much bait out at the beginning?
Think

SEE BLACKIE AND PORKA (I'm going to try this)

Hi Blackie
It's great to see father and daughter going bear hunting together !! one in the truck and one on a tree stand neener!

Please allow me to explain :
This is ur daughter's first bear hunt right ? If i was a father like yourself i would definitely want to go with my daughter and take video shot of my daughter's first bear hunt ever , and i am sure that any daughter would love to see that clip 30 years from now
ask ur daughter if that's possible, she may be cool about it ( this way u trick her to come along Yes ) , if so then u should give ur daughter plenty of room, so i suggest u place ur treestand on a tree located right behind ur daughter and little bit higher so once u start shooting u will be able to video both ur daughter and the bear at the same time,, if ur daughter prefer not then u should respect her decision and leave the area, DON'T STAY IN THE TRUCK !

if ur daughter went alone, i suggest she read my tips just in case a bear decided to climb the tree to investigate or do other things that might trigger ur daughter to panic and fall from the stand or else .
Don't be toooooooooooooo concern, I assure u that ur daughter is safer alone with 20 bears around then living alone in the concrete jungle that we all live in.

let me make a list of dos and don't and get back to you.

please check the website link i provided here and see hunting videos and let ur daughter see it to,, that may change her mind and let u come along

Ok i am back

1. Tell ur daughter not to leave the stand and walk to the truck alone, she must wait for u to come and pick her up.

2. if she shoots a bear, never go look for him by herself .

3. after spoting the dead bear, walk slowly from behind and check the belly to see if the bear is still breathing, if not then walk to the front and get a long stick and poke the bear in the eye, if he blink the bear is still alive, do not approach a finishing shot is required .

4. if the bear start climbing the tree toward ur daughter, never scream, never jump and never use her hand or foot to push the bear down, the bear might react and bite her hand or foot off, instead tell her to use her gun or arrows and hit him on the nose gently and say HEY BEAR, if the bear continue then push him down hard and tell her to raise her voice , that should stop him if not heck shoot him with an arrow, if she's using a rifle it's even better . don't use bear spray cause the bear will never come back.

5. timing is improtant, usualy the time to pick her up should be at dark, so always be there at the same time eveytime until she shoot her bear.
example: if u decide the time is 7 so always be there at 7.

6. I recommend u buy a walkie talkie so she can contact u in case of emergency or if she shoot a bear and want u to come now unstead of waiting for u to show up at the usual hour.

7. let her contact u only.. u never call her to check on her , who knows u may endup calling her at the wrong time and #$%#$ her only chance of getting her bear.

8. if u r not gonna be able to wait that long then contact each other on the hour or so. again let her call u and tell her to whisper when talking to u . ( hey dad i am ok ) is enough to make u happy again.

9. she should turn her walkie talkie down or off, who knows other ppl may be using the same channel and talk at the wrong time.

there is more i am sure, come on guys help him out and add few things u may find helpfull

don't wait to the last minute to setup the stand, u should do it soon u get hits. actually u can hang it right now since u know there is bears around. not too far from the scat would do just fine as long good cover is near . May i ask why baiting daily ?what are u trying to accomplish by doing that ?

I would use a couple of those 2 mile walkie talkies.
Leave yours turned on and she can turn hers on when she needs you or when she hears you fire a signal shot.....that's what we do. Yes

If you go the walkie talkie route, I'd consider an ear jack for her end. That would eliminate the racket from the squelch when you call her. Almost guaranteed, you'll check in just as a bear is coming to the bait. Murphy's Law.

Thanks for the help
My wife and I talked her into letting me be in a tree near her Big smile
She said "Dont mess it up for me"
I need to look for a camera, we do not have one, any suggestions?

Baiting;
Read quite a bit on line,
The way I took it was to put a lot of bait in the woods to get them coming at the begining then to reduce the amounts to about 2 gal just before hunting. The post that I read said that it creates compatition (first come first serve)
Climbing 1/2 way up the stand would get the bear used to rhe sound of somebody climbing the ladder.
Ringing a bell was my idea, the thought was getting the bear into a routine that when they hear a bell that the station has been refreshed.

I can bait for a month before the season.
Shes allowed 3 bait stations
I can put the tree stands out 3 weeks before the season.
And her season last only one week

I have found mutable sign in a few areas now with signs of large bear in a couple of them. The farthest area (the largest bear) is 30 miles from home with most areas being 15 miles or less

I think your baiting frequency is more than adequate. The only thing I don't think is necessary is to dump 150 lbs of meat right off the bat unless you know the bear is right in the neighborhood. If you first have to draw him to the site, expect your first bait to go bad before he finds it. You don't need 150 lbs of reeking meat when 20 lbs would be more than enough. And unless your bear is starving, he won't touch rotten meat. You do have to protect that first bait from scavengers--ravens, whiskeyjacks, vultures, skunks, coons, fox and coyotes so that they don't clean it up before a bear discovers it.. You could also consider a grease burn or honey burn at your first baiting but I've never found them to be that necessary around here because of the number of bears we have. I'm not familiar with the competition you'll have from neighboring hunters who also may be trying to draw that particular bear to their site but that may be one criteria that determines how often and how much you do bait.

bait setup

Being the father of two young daughters I applaud your decision to be near her during her hunt. I like your thinking regarding the baiting...but I wouldn't bother with the bell. I just add liquid smoke to the bait mix (vanilla would work too) and spray it when I'm in the stand, once the bears associate the smell of the liquid smoke with the bait when you spray it they will come. This past spring we underestimated how much they would eat in one nite and showed up on stand with the barrels empty. we sat there anyway and everytime I sprayed the liquid smoke into the air a bear would show up (3 different ones in the same nite) even with the barrels empty they still hung around working the ground where we had spread deep fryer oil over. I wouldn't put out too much meat until the baits were getting hit regularily...just the pasteries with deep fryer oil (if you can get it) all over the bait and the ground around it. I hope your daughter hammers a monster! if you video it post it for us too enjoy too! Good luck Thumbs up
