Our waterfowl season opens up this Saturday. Bismuth non-tox just arrived. Yum. Canada geese have been flocking up. A few mallards around, but not many. Not much water, either. Just got lined out on some more area to hunt. Jumped three greens and a hen scouting.

The shooting has begun. Got 6 mallards this morning - chewed up an embarrasing amount of ammo. More Bismuth non-tox just ordered. Got into a surprising amount of quacks. It is going to be a good week and good year.

Took my son out yesterday (SAT.) in the afternoon for a bit of scouting, of course we took the guns as upland birds and waterfowl are open. Was very windy only seen one flock of partridge and female phesant, and some nice white tails. So we took another drive and found seen some ducks on small water. We took 7 ducks mallards home for supper. Did a 3 on the bbq and the 3 in the pan with mushrooms and stuff. Gotta say don't over cook duck, it gets pretty dry. I knew that but still after taking it off the heat it still cooks for a bit. Gotta get the timing right and its good eating.

Reg ... sounds like a good shoot on the `small water'. I went out early and crept up on a pond. About 40 mallards. I just watched them for about ... well, seemed like 15 minutes ... swimming, playing, etc. I almost didn't want to shoot them - but then I remembered that it's hunting season. They were 40 yards plus when I did the jump. It never ceases to amaze me how fast they put distance between me and them once they make me. I got one.

But then I went out and worked a creek - and got three more. And later on a single green (drake mallard) at the pond. It's been a good weekend.

Okay, the shooting has stopped, for a while. Almost got into some serious geese. I'll chase these local birds a bit, alternating with rifle big game and other activities - and await their relatives from the north. Interestingly, the small water around here is already starting to freeze.

You can hunt big game at the same time. I guess you can sorta here too if your archery shooting. We found quite a large flock of geese this morning landing on what I thought was a field. Took a drive and found them sitting on the shore of a small slew. There is a nice bit of bush on one end which would make great cover. Only thing is I don't have decoys so it might be only one shoot then walk out. Having fun anyway. this is waterfowl so I will post todays bounty on the upland forum. Take care and happy hunting.

Geese are wonderful birds. I have made some amazing stalks on geese - even more intense than on big game (at least in my mind). To me it is a great challenge to try and get within gunning range when they are out in an open area.

Waterfowl opened here today and of course I was out in the blind. We got two today but it wasn't from lack of birds! Oops! We were training a new dog and he was a bit hyper in the blind to say the least!! The blind was shaking so hard from the dog jumping around it looked like big foot making love to a rhyno! Laugh

ChesterGolf ... interesting you mention new dog. I have a 1-year old Golden I have started taking out - and we just got a 2-month old Golden we just took delivery on. Getting a new dog on line means letting some birds go, so to speak.
