Well guys, I'm done for big game. Got a cow elk on opening morning of archery which I told you about in a previous post. Just in case someone didn't see the post it was my first elk and first time archery. And this morning I got a decent 3x2 buck. I was hunting a private ranch near Knox Canyon. This was my third time out and all I was seeing was does. The rancher told me to stay low and not hike that far into the canyons. His ranch did back up to BLM. I hiked into the mouth of one of the canyons and sat my butt down and waited for daylight. As the light started to appear in the eastern sky, I noticed a truck coming up a road on the next ranch over. I was on the edge of both ranches. He parked and I figured he was gonna hike up like I did thru the CRP and to the edge of the hills like I did. After about a half hour deer started busting out of everywhere below me. They kept looking over towards where I figured the other guy was coming up. I was thinking I hope they decide to come up my canyon so I can get a look, but from what I could from a distance most if not all were does. Well, it figures, they went up the next canyon over. Oh well. To my amazement, about 15 minutes later, does started sky lining on the ridge across from me. One doe, two, three, four, five, six, no wait a minute, its a buck. YES!! I looked him over for a couple of minutes and decided what the heck I will try. I got out the range finder. 234 yards. I picked up my Winchester 7MM and squeezed the trigger. Deer were scattering everwhere but didn't know where the shot came from. They were very confused. They were just kinda going around in circles. I picked up my binos and looked across the canyon and laying on the ground, dead as a door nail, was my buck. I sat for about 15 minutes to reflect on what had happened and to settle my nerves. Then I noticed two hunters coming up the canyon. I waited for them to get to me to thank them for spooking all those deer to me. They said they only saw three does as they were walking. I told them they had spooked at least 20 deer out of the CRP and some of them came my way and one was my buck. I thanked them again and they continued on. Anyway the buck is no monster, but he is a fine animal and will make great table fare. I hope the rest of you guys good luck. See ya. Can't wait for next year!!!!
