Screwed By The Utah DWR!!!!!!

I just found out that I didn't draw an Elk Tag with my Group that I put in with. I drew a Goat tag instead. How is this possable? Read the rules from there guide book below. I will tell you how. The say that these are not the official rules. They said that these are just a summery of the rules. So I Checked the Official Rules guess what they say basically the same. So I called them Again and now they tell me that the full rules are not published. What a bunch of B.S. The Utah DWR is so full of crap! They said that they draw in three different rounds a max point round, regular round, and a youth round. So I drew the Goat tag in the max point round. And my Group drew the elk tags in the regular round. I think that if this is they way it is going to be they should have to tell people the way they draw. They told me that there is nothing they can do for me!!!

Drawing process

Utah Admin. Rule R657-62-19

Big game permits are drawn in the following order:

• First—buck deer (premium limited-entry, limited-entry, CWMU and management buck deer)

• Second—bull elk (premium limited-entry, limited-entry and CWMU)

• Third—buck pronghorn (limited-entry and CWMU)

• Fourth—once-in-a-lifetime

• Fifth—youth general buck deer

• Sixth—general buck deer and general buck/bull combination

• Last—youth any bull elk

Because of the order in which permits are drawn, you won’t be included in the drawing for a once-in-a-lifetime permit if you draw any of the following permits:

• Buck deer (limited-entry, premium limited-entry, CWMU or management buck deer)

• Bull elk (limited-entry, premium limited-entry or CWMU)

• Buck pronghorn (limited-entry or CWMU)

weird

But, wouldn't you rather go mountain goat hunting?  Obviously, you're at their mercy and thankfully I haven't had problems like this before.  Still, I've seen those drawing rules printed for years, not sure how they screw that up.

But seriously... Mountain Goat vs Elk?  No brainer for me.

You weren't screwed but it

You weren't screwed but it sounds like you have some sour grapes.  I presume that by goat you mean mountain goat which is a once in a lifetime hunt and not antelope which you can draw every few years.  Also was the elk tag limited entry CWMU or general season?  Now if you read the rules you can only have one once in a lifetime tag (goat) or one limited entry tag (elk) but not both in the same year.  The rules are quite simple and not that hard to understand.

I have max points for

I have max points for mountain goat so I could draw it next year. The elk hunt was limited entry. I know its cool that I have a tag but it is frustrating that they dont follow there own rules.

The rules say if you draw

The rules say if you draw limited Elk you cant draw Mountain Goat. I should have drawn a Elk Tag with My Group. Your right that is not that hard to understand!!!!

hard time

I'm having a hard time understanding your anger.  My goodness, do you know how many guys would give their left testicle to draw an once-in-a-lifetime tag like that???  I lived in Utah for ten years and applied for that goat tag every year.  I hunted lots of elk during that time.  I can see why you are disappointed that you don't get to hunt with your buddies, but maybe you can talk them into tagging along with you on an incredibly exciting hunt.  It reminds me of putting in for a million dollar lottery and being drawn for the mega Powerball lottery.

My only suggestion is that rather than being angry at the Utah DWR, that you make the best of a wonderful opportunity and enjoy your goat hunt.  Too bad you can't sell that tag; you could make some serious cash.

Good luck on your goat hunt.  I'd love to see pictures of the goat and your big smile.

I would still like to know

I would still like to know how you drew a limited entry elk tag and a once in a life time tag in the same year.  The rules are quite simple and from what they say you can only have one of those tags each year.

This if from the guide book:

Residents

If you’re a Utah resident, you can apply to hunt one of the following:

• Buck deer—premium limited-entry, limited-entry, management buck deer and CWMU hunts

• Bull elk—premium limited-entry, limited-entry and CWMU hunts

• Buck pronghorn—limited-entry and CWMU hunts

In addition to applying for a limited-entry permit for one of those three species, you can also apply for one once-in-a-lifetime permit.

You may draw only one of the above permits each year.

I don't think that was his

I don't think that was his problem Criter.  i think that he assumed the "Limited entry elk" would be drawn first", and then if he didn't get that, then he would move on to the goat drawing.

His post has "First....Second....Third" written next to the draws, so I guess they go in that order.  He appears to wonder how he could not get the elk tag, drawn first and his buddies got it, vut then he still managed to pull a OIL tag for goat.

I bet they drew the OIL tag for goat first, and he was drawn, so they omitted his name from the elk draw.

either way, congrats Hawk!  Looks like you'll be having a good trip this fall.  However, I am with the other guys, a OIL goat tag versus an elk?  Not too sure I'd turn that one down... Wink

Well I'm happy for you that

Well I'm happy for you that you got the tag you wanted I would agree with the others that wish we could be so badly treated by drawing such a great tag.

Good luck on both your hunts as they are great ones.
