Scoutting for Antelope Hey ElkKill06

Well, I just got home from my scoutting trip for my antlope tag down by Delta, Colorado and I'll tell you one thing those animals are hard to find down there anymore.  I talked to a couple of game biologest and they even said that the herd is way down from what they would like to see.  I did manage to find a couple of small herds (4-6) of them and since I didn't want to spook them I held off trying to get a little bit closer to take a picture.  I did see a couple of nice bucks so all is not lost just yet.  Now I just need to finish tweeking my loads for both my rifle and pistol and head out and bag one of them.

On a side note I did get to meet Matt at Precision Taxidermy and talked with him for awhile about my upcoming bear hunt and a mount.  It was interesting in that so far I have talked to 4 other taxidermest and he is the only one that will alter a mount to what the customer wants Thumbs up

Very cool Critter!  Do you

Very cool Critter!  Do you think the bucks you saw have been scouted by other hunters, or is there a chance that you could have them to yourselves?  How far off the beaten path are they?

Best of luck to you.  Hoping you get a good antelope!  When is the opener for you?

It is interesting in that

It is interesting in that when you asked about another hunter I remembered that there are only 2 tags for this hunt and I have one of them.  So I just hope that the other hunter hasn't.  When I talked to one of the biologist he mentioned that the herd was way down and that a few of the other herds were having the same problem and that they don't know what is causing it.  I'm afraid that with what I saw in a couple of days out there that they may have to shut the hunt down and try and let the antelope recover to a decent size herd.  My biggest problem besides finding them again will be trying to put a stalk on one.  The tallest piece of brush out there is only about 6" high and there are very few ravines.  I joked to one of my friends that was out there with me that we need to go to a costume shop and see if they have a cow one.  He does have a cow elk decoy so we may just try it if we have to.

It is going to be a interesting hunt.

Didn't they post some stuff

Didn't they post some stuff by that guy who wore an antelope hat or something, and showed some photos of the ones he'd killed using it??? lol

I bet you can get flat enough to creep along at 6 inches high, right???

Glad you got out there and

Glad you got out there and found what you were looking for.  I think I am gonna have to turn in my Colorado antelope tag...its just a doe, but it conflicts with my schedule and antelope hunt in Wyoming.  we have 6 tgs for Wyoming and I was the only one to puit in for Colorado som it only makes sense to turn it in.

GooseHunter:  I will say one

GooseHunter:  I will say one thing that after the first day of scouting I was about ready to turn in the tag and get my points back but then I found a man that was sighting in his rifle in the general area and talked to him and he put me onto them.  But still in 2 days of scouting I only saw a total of 7 antelope and only a couple of shooter bucks.  Seeing them boosted my ego a little and I decided to keep the tag and give it my best for the whole hunt.  I'll have a couple of helpers the first couple of days but then they have to go back to work and I'll be on my own, but sometimes that is for the best.  I guess that there is a reason that the number of tags went from around 12 down to just 2 for last year and then again this year.

Good luck on your Wyoming tags.

Cagey goats !

Critter,

The population has dropped, but not as much as they believe. Due to the new 4 lane highway and the amount of people that play out in that country now the speed goats have really changed there habits.

I sent you a PM and good luck with your super hunt.

Quinton

Good luck with this hunt

Good luck with this hunt Critter. I know you've been building points a long time for this one. That's why I started going to Wyoming as Colorado just takes too darn long to get to go hunting them.

It is funny in that when I

It is funny in that when I started to build points the group that I was hunting then wanted to do a unit 3, 4 or 5 which took about 5 or 6 points to draw.  Then once we got the points the units had dropped to 0 or 1 point to draw.  That and the group moved either out of state or wanted to do other things so I just kept putting in for PP's figuring that I would get a real nice hunt some day.  It also didn't bother me that much since I was putting in for a ML hunt that starts the last Wednesday in September so I would of had a little bit of a conflict there if I drew both tags.  So this year I just put in for a point on the ML hunt and figured that I would draw this tag by Delta which I did.  But I did screw up on the first application for the ML hunt in that I actually put in for it and would of drawn it this year but I pulled the application and reapplied for the point.

I guess that I need to start marking things on the calander as far as what hunts that I am putting in for and when they run to try and keep different states straight.  But it is fun living dangerously.

Back in 03 or whenever it was

Back in 03 or whenever it was he was the only one then that would do what I wanted. Or of they would they wanted to add hundreds of dollars to the price. I rarely get anything done but if I do he is the only one I will use. I've known hin since 97 when he was fairly new and he did my lion rug back then. Even if you don't go back for ten years he will still remember your name like you were just there yesterday.
