scouting oregon n.cascade for spring black bear

Well, I feel better, got boots on the ground finally!  Had great weather and was able to work back road from Harriet lake and up colowash river area.  Yah so, I know you locals are laughing because I'm scouting for bear with a hot tub near by.  Many late night recreation users to watch out for.  It was freaking beutiful up there and most roads except back road to harriet are open with little snow for now.  When talking with ranger in town she mentioned 1000ft snow level next couple days, things can change so fast.  I worked a variety of elevations and I saw little activity from bears.  Now elk is a whole nother deal, I found old rubs and Elk dooky land mind area, lol.  I will get my Archery Elk in addition to deer for sure this year!

-Anyone who can add to hunting santiam in spring or this season info please continue.

Good Luck and Thanks

I havent been able to get out

I havent been able to get out yet this spring, I plan on getting out next friday if the weather is good, checked the forcast and looks like rain for now but who knows what the week will bring and you know the weatherman are always wrong around here that far out.LOL. Its probaly still a little to early to see any bears out and about, i woulds suspect inthe next 2-3 weeks it will be better. I have been chasing a big boar for the past few years in one area, i have hime on trail cam over the past 3 years and he's pretty big, not exactly what I'm looking for in color but still a heck of a bear. If you want PM me and I'll tell you where I have been seeing him, like i said he's not really what i'm looking for. He is probaly around 250-280lbs, the reason I dont want him is beacuse of the tan snout, I want a all black or color phase, I dont want a tan muzzle. I had him on cam as late as last fall so I'm sure he's still up there somewhere. I have known other hunters to get bears out of this area and I have even called in a small 150lbs bear last year up there. Did  you see that elk sign up by harriet? last spring i saw a nice herd for the santiam about 20 head in it with 2 bulls, so i know theres a few up there. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

Love those weather forecasters!

Seems like I get better luck lookin to the west and seeing whats comin for myself but its gotta be a tough job here.  Sounds like you know how to read the forecast, just dont trust more that a few out.  My break guy was up on a deer tag on loggin road just past harriet and had to stop for 30min or so to wait for a 20-30 to pass, said there were some good seed in the group.  Just from growin up around here I usually put in for paulina or sled springs but such a long trip to scout.  The sign I found was above pipeline but not fresh, more like an old cow pasture with some good rub nearby.  I will be taking my girl on her own deer bow so lookin for any reason to go scout this spring with my bear tag in case the situation presents itself.  Not alot of estacada rangers have seen the roads yet so it was helpful to see for myself.  Still gettin a little cold at night but roads were easy travling and more open than I thought up there.  I am checking a few other areas I suspect they will be crawlin out of soon.  I will keep ya all posted on spring black bear in the Santiam area.  Thanks for the info bro.

lucked out on the weather!

-Well I drove into that area again and made it pretty far up.  Harriet looked great, and the snow line is about half way up big ridge above harriet.  I am kickin myself for not taking more pics of the area to show, next time.  It was passable up but we got snowed on a little coming back out.  Found a great bling area and just as we were driving off there was movement in the thick part, 4 of the 5 looked like blacktail deer but the fifth had obvious short legs of the mule deer.  I was 20 yrd or less and still had a hard time identifying in the dark brush.  I have heard that mulies will migrate with black and white tails, could this be a cross offspring?  As for bear, about 1000 ft up on a hike we found a great food source and a few turned logs.  Going to check a few areas this weekend, will keep ya posted!
