Scouting From Kuwait

Hi all. Just found this website as I was talking to my wife back in the states. I am currently deployed in Kuwait. Hoping to start looking for places to hunt antelope up in Northern Colorado since I just go orders there for next year. I guess scouting over the internet is all I got right now.
Any help would be appreciated.
Matt

Welcome aboard!

Colorado has some very nice antelope herds. Any particular spot you're interested in? Antelope is by draw, and most likely you'll also need to build up some points. The DOW website issues a hunting guide with stats and information from the previous year. They just released a new one. You can find them on this page:

Cowgal, thanks. I am primarily an archery hunter, I was under the impression that you could get unlimited licenses over the counter for some units?
hoping to find areas around Ft Collins where I will be working but anywere up north should be good for driving distances. My weekends will be limited with my new job there.

Ah yes, archery is a bit easier to get a tag for than rifle. However in my area (northwest Colorado) even archery tags are by draw only. Around Ft Collins there are a few units that offer OTC tags.

Not sure how the antelope herds are doing on the east side of the mountains. I do know here on the western side they are doing very well and are quite plentiful. So I have found it puzzling that all tags are by draw and its hard to draw out for rifle season.

Being based out of Ft Collins will give you the opportunity to hunt a variety of species. Have you visited the area yet?

Cowgal I'm pretty familiar with the area but haven't hunted in CO. Spent a lot of time in Denver when I was in school. Drove through the grasslands North of Ft Collins a bunch of times on my way through wyoming.
My big goals are to get an antelope and a bull Elk during the two years I will be there.
Been out in your "neck of the woods" once or twice, sure is pretty.

Marine, you shouldn't have any trouble fulfilling both of your goals, antelope & elk.

For elk you'll most likely have to head up the Poudre towards Cameron Pass. I've seen them up there, but don't know how large the herds are. To get away from people you may need go a bit further west, maybe even towards the Walden area.

Good luck! Stay safe.

Hi, there are lots of opportunities for pronghorn in northern colo. I would recommend going east of Ft. Collins. Archery tags are over the counter. The pawnee grasslands are loaded with antelope. The only problem is not much public land there is some but mainly isolated small pieces. However, there are still a lot of good ranchers out there that are more than happy to let hunters on there land. I find they are more likely to let archers than rifle hunters. Plus i know a lot of them in the area i go so that helps. Hope this helps. If you have some more questions or want to talk about it email me mrmuzzy@aol.com
