Scouting for elk in Washington

Hello I am in the navy and have moved to Washington from Idaho. I cant wait to see what type of hunting Washington has to offer But I am stuck out on a boat all summer. I should be back late July. I was hoping to hunt elk this year but do not have a clue on where to start scouting when I get back. I have researched what I can from the internet But I was wondering if anyone might have a few tips on some areas that have public land and general season elk tags. Any information would be appreciated.

P.S. I would like to hunt mulies as well if I can find them.

The area north of Ellensburg / Kittitas can be good but gets pretty crowded on weekends. Go to;

Seems like to hunt branch bulls these days, you have to get drawn for a branch bull tag. I understand that you will have to put in earlier this year for those drawings than in past years. Keep an eye on the WDFW web site for dates to apply.

Good luck and thank you for your service to our country.

Hey thanks for the info. I have beenn looking at the area of Ellensberg from the internet. If I am not mistaken that is the Weyerhauser land. How does that work do they allow public hunting and is there a general season hunt their.

For the Winston Unit is there much public land and how about the tags. Are there any general season hunts in that unit.I am really wanting to get into some back countryto hunt. Thats how I have always hunted and I am up for hiking a long ways if I can find some good areas.

Thanks for the help!!!

So to narrow it down we need to know what your weapon choice is.

The Hunting regulations came out last week so you will want to download a copy and learn the GMUs and opening dates.

You will also want to search the harvest data by GMU that is available at the above mentioned site.

As for the Winston, it is a mix of state and private timberland.

I have hunted elk for several years with a bow and now with a muzzleloader. The area around Naches,cle elum, and ellensburg are great places on the east side, winston creek, and the area around the humptulips area have been good for the west side.

Thanks for your service! I also was in the Navy, USS IOWA

Thumbs up
